I did the food game too, with Maggie. She then turned into one of the biggest picky eaters in the state. I was concerned, because I had ran out of options on what next to feed her. I turned to YT members. They steered me in the right direction. I was told to buy some qualtiy dry food, put it down for her to eat. They said she will not starve, and will eat the food. It took a day without eating, but now she eats what she is suppose to eat. I am so grateful for the advice too. Normally the puppies are fed 4 times a day. A normal portion of food is 1 Tablespoon per pound of weight. I got that info from Maggie's breeder. |
Its so great to hear from everybody and what they do with their pups. I feel like I learn so much on YT, just from going through the posts. I got Coco last week and the breeder told me I could feed her Roast Beef on the side of her Little Ceasars food. However, myself and my vet do not agree with feeding the dog table food so I didnt. UNTIL she would not eat neither the soft food or the hard. So I started chopping the Roast beef into little pieces on top of Little Ceasars JUST TO get her to eat something. Now I feed her the LC ( which I want to switch because I know it isnt the best) and I put some dry food in the wet to get her used to eating it (she usually picks is out. Then sometimes I leave the dry food out BUT she never eats it. I feed her 3 times a day to make sure she is eating. |
Janine: When are we going to see pics of your little coco??? |
I use a mix of 1 part Royal Canin mini and 2 parts Biljac. I measure the days rations into a plastic bag, add 1/4 can Pedigree puppy lamb and rice. MOOSH it all til the dry is sorta coated with canned. I fill all the dishes in the morning with 3/4 of the amount for the day. Refrigerate the rest. If they eat it all, I put the remainder down. I NEVER ADVISE A TOY BREED PUPPY GO WITHOUT FOOD TIL IT EATS..I do have some who eat more than others so I watch them. This has worked for me for many years. I did also try to find some foods in the whole dog journal, but they were not easily found in my area. The only store that had them also sells puppies and I will not buy from them. I have used the meat rolls for treats but more than just a bit and mine gets runs.. |
Great thread! This is such a great thread. Just today I was worrying if Kiko was getting enough to eat, it was really getting to me. I was sitting with him when my husband came home and I was trying to tease him with the food to get him to eat it. I told my husband I was really worried about him and was thinking of taking him back to the vet. Then I come on the site and find this thread! I've been monitoring his eating and it comes to about 2 tbls which using the per pound measurment it's an ok amount. I was thinking of giving him boiled chicken and rice in his dry mix because I was so concerned. But with all this great advice I feel better and know so much more. I can see him picking out the rice and chicken and leaving the dry dog food to rot LOL. I can also see how the boiled chicken and rice or wet food could really help a puppy that is in serious need of gaining weight and how best to wiegh out the pros and cons before making a decision. The wierd thing is he's a little night owl and wants to play when it's time to go to bed! This is also the time he eats and drinks the most. Before this thread the amounts he was eating seemed so small I was afraid it wasn't enough. I feel more secure that he is doing ok now thanks!!! |
I just wanted to add that when Chewyy wasn't eating well, I would sit with thim and hand feed him one kibble at a time and i would also give him Nutrical a few times per day so he was getting some nutrition. |
What was the breeder feeding your pup? All of my dogs were given Eukanuba and they are healthy as a horse. I have not gotten any complaints from my vet. |
Princess is 11 weeks old and weighs 3 pounds. I appreciate everyones help. her tummy was sick today and she had gas because we keep switching foods :( I felt awful...... I just want to find a food that she enjoys and is good for her. Thanks everyone :) |
oh also the breeder said she was feeding her Eukanuba dried food, but when we got her home and tried to get her to eat it, she looked as though she never ate it before in her life. We were scared of hyprglycemia so we switched to moist food in two days. I think I should just do what Maggie's mom did and only give her dry. I assume she will eat it when she is starving. Thanks everyone. Please continue to give your suggestions, I appreciate every one! |

Welcome, welcome, welcome!!!!! DAna |
The dry food will be best for her. The crunching will help keep plaque build up off of the teeth. Best of luck to you and your new baby! |
Well when I first got Louie at 4 months, the vet told me to feed him 1 tblsp of food about 6 times a day and then just feel him out and lessen the times per day as i increased the amount. So he is 9 months now and i feed him 3 times a day ......probobly about 2 tblsp of food each feeding plus little snacks thruout the day. When I first got him I gave him the dry food and he didnt like it so the vet said i could mix it with a little peanut butter ...which I did and he loved it. Hope this helps. good luck |
My little trick to get mine to eat whenever they are being picky is to mix in a tablespoon of lamb baby food.. They inhale their food after that. Luckily neither of mine are too picky, they usually eat their food right up. I have heard that with higher quality foods like Innova that you actually need to feed them less than you would feed them of a lower quality because it's very rich. |
something i found at the local pet store is "dry food gravy." it works great compaired to adding water to dry food because when you wet the food you lose a lot of vitamins and vital parts your pup needs. the "gravy" makes it easier to eat, better tasting, and has more of what your puppy needs. just an idea :) |
