She definetly looks like a Yorkie to me, and like you said it does not matter what she is!!! But if people are really bothering you because of her size tell them that Yorkies come in all sizes, and that Yorkies while many are tiny, and all Yorkies are beautiful, are not suppossed to be tiny frail little dogs. That the Yorkie is supposed to be a small, spirited and proud terrier and that the breed standard as set by the AKC states that they are to weigh between 4-7 pounds and that most dogs in the show ring are on the upper end of that. Responsible breeders do not breed their dogs to be overly tiny! 10 pounds is pretty close to the breed standard, so hey I would not worry about it.

I have two, they are very different, people are always asking what kind of dog Chloe is because she is bigger and has light coloring. The little one looks like the "typical" yorkie, if there is such a thing. small, short legs, straight body, black and tan coloring. They are both yorkies and loved equally. Your dog is beautiful and looks good regardless.

I've noticed the bigger Yorkie tend to have a little longer nose and body. My Gizmo weighs 9 pounds and he looks alot different from Zoey, both are AKC Yorkies. Your baby looks 100% yorkie to me.

Hi kp and nala your baby is definitly a yorkie Im no expert either but I just lost my silky of 10 yrs last nov.They are identicle as puppies both breeds but look different as full growns. :) dianne :)

If she looks like a yorkie ( and she does and is very pretty also), acts like a yorkie and smells like a yorkie ----- must be one.lol All kidding aside, she looks like a beautiful yorkie to me (I'm no expert). My yorkie weighs 12 pounds and is silver and blond. I don't care if he is sky blue pink and half elephant and half racoon.lol :)

Act extremely upset that they don't recognize for the wonderful example of a bred-down toy Rottie. Tell them they should see her mum and dad,,over 100 pounds each. "Aren't I lucky to have gotten one this size?" Old women like me get by with a lot of tongue-in-cheeck stuff so I use that..They are rude. Maybe you could say to them "Oh, I didn't realize that your dog was a real Yorkie. Are you really sure??" I am so mean..

Looks like a yorkie to me! Next time they make snide comments like that...obviously to piss you off...show them the CKC papers!

A friend of mine use to ALWAYS make comments when we got our deer chihuahua. "THAT ISN'T A REAL CHIHUAHUA...SHE ISN'T FULL BLOODED...LOOK AT HOW TALL SHE IS...HER FACE ISN'T A CHIHUAHUA'S FACE IT'S TOO LONG...I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU PAID MONEY FOR HER". I told her that the lady advertised her as full blooded but even I thought that she was mixed with rat terrier. I saw the parents and I know that the daddy was full chihuahua and momma was probably half. She just couldn't leave it alone. Almost like she had to prove something. Use to make me so mad! I didn't care what she was mixed with! She was our baby!

as long as they are your baby dont worry about what they say. she is very pretty and yes a big girl but that is ok more to love :D I mean my brownie is a chihuahua mix and no one belives me but I know for a fact I had to rush her mommy who was a full blood chihuahua (now when it comes to the daddy i have no idea what he was) to the vet while she was in labor cause she was stuck so I dont care what others say she is my baby and I love her for just being her, and for not taking after her mom .. :) she was not the nicest dog ...

This was on that site Taje found, it's very interesting information although I'm not sure I agree with everything he says even though I'm not an expert, there was some good comparison photos too but you'll have to check the site to see those.
I think your girl is beautiful. Poo on those that try and say she's not a yorkie because she doesn't fit the yorkie stereo type or the akc standard. This site is filled with gorgeous larger size yorkies and your girl is one of them. I used to have a Silky Terrier as a young girl and I can tell you one thing for 100% sure their demeanor is totally different. They are not readily lap dogs and even though they may look similar in comparison, a silky has a stronger body frame. I could not mistake my silky for a yorkie the personalities are very different, not to say one is better than the other..just different.

Silky Terrier ~ Yorkshire Terriers ~ Australian Terrier
One of the questions ask most often is, " What is the difference between a Yorkie and Silky?" I will attempt to explain this along with photos for you to observe the differences.

A Silky is a 10 lb dog of substantial body for strength but with fine bone for agility. They have a 'wedge' shape to the head (longer muzzle and flatter skull) with ears that stand erect on top of the head. They are a bit longer in body than tall at the shoulders. They are well muscled and extremely alert. Ready to please but with a stubborn streak if forced rather than 'ask' to perform a task. The Silky coat is just that "Silky". It can be any shade of blue from a light steel blue, to pidgeon blue to a darker slate blue and many varing shades in between. The tans should be rich and vibrant. NO BOWS PLEASE A Silky is truly a BIG DOG in a small dog suit!! They love to run and play outdoors, chase the squirrels and keep all those big dogs at bay! You can carry one around but they would much prefer to walk, thank you!


A Yorkie is a dog of approximate weight of 4 -5 lbs, (not over 7 lbs.). The head is shorter in muzzle and is more dome shaped. The ears are erect but may tend to flare to the side a bit. They usually have a larger base than a Silky ear. The Yorkie is a square dog meaning that it is no longer than it is tall at shoulder giving a 'box' appearance. A Yorkie is only suppose to be a 'slate' color of blue and the coat is usually heavier and floor length (when kept in show condition). A Yorkie is more of a toy dog than a Silky in that they readily become a lap dog. And love to be pampered and waited on.


The Australian Terrier is a bit harsher than the Silky but basically the same head shape and body style but a bit larger package. The weight generally runs in the 16 - 20 lb range. They have a different coat texture in that they are what is called a "broken coat" terrier and they carry an undercoat and a guard coat. They are the blue and tan coloration (as well as solid reds). The topknot is a bit softer than the rest of the body coat and should be profuse.

When they bother you again tell em "Oh really? So what makes you and expert?" :p

I personally think she's a yorkie.Nala is beautiful,she looks like my Baby and he's all yorkie.You should tell them to mind their own business if they don't know what their talking about.

Last night the girl in Hollywood video insisted that Maximus was a silkie...because she has a silkie and he looks like Maximus....she bought her dog from a "LUXURY" petstore...so that made her the "expert"...I told her maybe her dog was a yorkie then and walked out!!

You know, when my skinkids were small it was always the relatives that had no kids that knew exactly what it was I was doing wrong with my kids.

I swear, people who don't know what they are talking about should keep their comments to themselves even if they are well intentioned.

Hello Everyone,

I just joined this forum yesterday, and this is my first post. I don't have a picture to show you, but I am really questioning some things about my yorkie. I need advice REALLY bad. My yorkie, Casey, is 6 months and I'd guess 8-10 pds. He is long too. His legs, front part of his chest, just close around his nose, inside of his ears, and a little around the frame of his face (but low) is tan. His eyebrows are tanish--silver along with the bridge of his nose up. Everything else is black. I took him to get groomed yesterday, and the groomer said, "he's a yorkie mix right?" It hurts my feelings. I have always wanted a yorkie--and a smaller one at that. I had to wait until I got a house and had the money. I'm in need of advice badly!!!!
