Is my yorkie normal in height? Hello, I am relatively new to YT. I have a yorkie who is 19 weeks old, weighs 1 pound 2 ounces(according to the food scale), he is only 4 inches tall. If that! His little belly is only off the ground by 2 inches, if that. Is this normal? He doesn't look like he will ever grow taller. His little legs are very fragile and fine boned. Oh yeh, short too. How tall should he get? Thank you for your input and information. |
Wow, that is very tiny. I'm not exactly sure how tall they should get but I have a yorkie about the same age as yours, he was born on Vaentine's day! and he is 2.7lbs and from the feet to the middle of his back he is 7 inches, 3.5 inches from floor to belly. he is 9.5 inches long and expected to be between 3-4 lbs fuly grown. By the sound of things your doggie is probably going to be half to 3/4 the size of my pup. Out of curiosity, where did you get him? |
WELCOME TO YT!!! Have you gotten your little guy checked out by the vet? That sounds awfully small for 19 weeks. My little girl is tiny, weighing at almost 2lbs at 17 weeks but she is about 6 inches tall, but 4 seems awfully small. As long as he's healthy though. I couldn't tell you big he would get because they can go through a sudden growth spurt. Do you have pictures of your baby?? :p |
Hi and welcome! He is very small. What is his name? Love to see pictures. Agree, if he is healthy, that is the main thing. Be careful with that little one, they are very fragile. |
Thanks for answering Chewysmom, and vainchick5, I got him from a breeder in Missouri.Lakeviewacres Kennel. I had to fly from Sacramento, CA. to Tulsa, where they met me. I have had him for 5 weeks now. I had him checked by his vet, a cardiologist, and an orthopedic specialist. Sounds crazy, huh? But I was worried because I have heard horror stories of all the illnesses Yorkies are prone to. I would also like to express my sadness to Vainchick5 about her breakup. You are young, and someone else will come along, or he will come back. Men come and go, but your baby(yorkie) will always be there for you!!! |
Height Gosh that sounds pretty small. I'd ak the vet if his size is within range. I'd love to see some pics! |
1 Attachment(s) My yorkies name is Rupert! His picture is below. Thanks for everyone responses and the nice welcome. I am usually on-line reading all your questions and replies. Sometimes, a little too shy to talk. Thank you everyone!! |
Ohhhhhhhhh! He's an absolute DOLL BABY! What big gorgeous eyes he has. Whatever size he is, he's a keeper! |
Oh!! He is gorgeous! I love the name Rupert. many years ago I had a friend with a Sharpei and I name the dog for him. It was Rupert. |
He is precious, and so is his name! :) |
Thank you! But I have noticed he is a little bald, his hair is so thin. I think this could be a side affect of being so small. Do you thin is hair will ever grow in like other Yorkies? I think all the yorkies that I have seen on this forum are all adorable. I am used to only big dogs, this is my first tiny dog. I can see now why you are all crazy for yorkies. |
His hair looks great, it's actually a little shorter than Chewy's, his is starting to grow over his eyes so I have to put it up! Your boy is absolutely lovely. |
Chewy's hair is gorgeous! It looks full! He is just the "cutest".If you really look at Rupert's picture, wherever you see white, that is his scalp! He is almost bald, except around his muzzle. I hope Rupert's hair becomes as nice as Chewy's. |
How much does he weigh? Just curious, do you live in Sacramento? There has been posts by others in the past about their yorkie's hair thinning at about 5 or 6 months I believe. I thought Tinkerbell was thinning on top as well at about 3 months old but turned out she just had very light color coming through and looked bald. |
hi and welcome my rosie went bald at about 11 weeks so i took her to the vets and she had a skin infection the vet gave her a jab and it has cleared up lovely (at last), the funny thing is were the fur fell out on her hind and front legs its grown back blue so she has blue legs black body and a tan head, but i love her loads. rosie is 5 months on the 6th july and weighs 6lb shes all cuddly and yummy. if you have had her checked out by a vet and there are no physical problems you may just have a very very tiny yorkie (how sweet) dont worry she may even grow some more. wendy and rosie :rose: |
Don't worry about the white. Chewy has a lot of hair but the roots are all white, I'm almost afraid to get him groomed. Also on the note of size, lik the last post said, some yorkies arejust small plain and simple. Just be mindful of him - we never wear shoes in the house anymore - and you will be fine. |
Welcome to YT your little guy is very adorable. |

Yes, I live in Sacramento. Rupert weighs 1 pound, 2 ounces. He has a fat belly!!! When I got him he had coccidia. No worms. But the coccidia was bad enough. He is all well now. He has been on the bald side since I received him. I couldn't imagine his hair going through a thinning period! He will be bald then!! YUK! It's already horribly thin compared to all the pictures of all your babies. |
Well I can imagine that coccidia might cause hair problems, but I'm not sure about that at all. Hang in there, they do tend to go through a bit of a scraggly stage before they turn into swans. |

Omg!!! I Want Him!!!! |
Welcome and you're baby is absolutely adorable. Gwen is 3 years old and only 2lb2oz, so mabe your baby is going to stay little like her. Just watch you don't sit on him. Gwen always sits down right when I'm ready to sit down. Silly girl. |
Hi and welcome! The white on the top of his head doesn't mean he's going bald it means he's going to hav e avery light coat. the same thing is happening with tucker. but he is 11 weeks. he is absoulty beautiful and i love his name!! |
jodykane, Rupert is precious! Oh, what a face!!!And such a nice name. I only wish that General Patton was smaller(now 4lbs at 11 weeks) Welcome to YT. ~Bella, General Patton, & Maria~ |
He is so very gorgeous! Beautiful fella! Don't worry about the thin hair, Lida has it too, the vet said it was puppy hair and her adult coat would be thicker, sometimes they have a vitamin deficiency inutero but it won't affect the adult coat. He looks a lot fuzzier than Lida though, he is absolutely precious! Welcome to YT! This is a really great place, don't be shy! Windy and Lida Rose |
1 Attachment(s) Hi...thought I'd share a picture of Pepper. He had very short legs. This picture was taken when he was around 10 months. Abby had very thin hair and I was discouraged because I thought it was never going to grow. She is over a year and its Finally starting to fill in!! You're little Rubert is adorable! :) jeanne |

If I did not know, I would think it was Dennis the Menace! Of course I agree that Rupert is quite a handsome. He does not look balding to me, though just this week I have noticed that Dennis is also thinning on top or is getting just a little silver. I keep putting on my glasses to get a better look, but I still can't tell. I would not worry about his hair though, it looks great to me and he is just young yet. Sue |
Oh my goodness! Rupert is absolutely adorable. If I had him, I would just carry him everywhere and never put him down! :D I bet you could sneak him in anywhere! You'll have to keep posting pictures of him so we can watch this little guy "grow up." Oh, and like the others, I wouldn't worry about his hair. |
He is sooooooo darn cute. I wouldnt worry about his size. As long as he's healthy. My Gus was only 1.8 lbs at 7 months. And now he's a year and 3 months and is 2.5 lbs, well he was before his accident. He wasnt eatting and was getting so skinny. so I was giving him humen food and quite a bit of nutacal. and now he's just under 3 lbs. He's a tiny chunky little guy. Legs measure 4 1/2 in. And his body (head to tail) is 10 in. They come in all different sizes and are all precious!!! Welcome to YT. Oh did I say,,, he's so darn cute??? |
