new yorkie owner... have questions and need some advice... PLEASE ^.^ i just brought a yorkie, dwe ji, 2 days ago. i've never had a pet before of any kind... except for some goldfishes when i was 3... and i have some questions and need lots of advice. hope i can get some help :D <3 ...well she cries and shakes alot, its probably just because she's scared right? ...how long, do you guys think, before she will get use to being with me. ...oh and she sleeps alot. thats okai right? ...how long will it take before she gets house trained ...how often should i bathe her ...and she doesnt like her toys very much.. any advice? and i had alot more to say but now i dont remmeber. keke, well any advice at all would be greatly appriciated. thanx alot!!. ^________^" |
...well she cries and shakes alot, its probably just because she's scared right? Is she crying all the time, day and night? Or just at night? I would say that's abnormal if it's happening all the time. If it's at night, she probably just misses her littermates, and maybe you should snuggler her when she is. ...how long, do you guys think, before she will get use to being with me. As far as what??? What do you mean, "get used to"? ...oh and she sleeps alot. thats okai right? Sleeping a lot is typical for a puppy. How old is she? ...how long will it take before she gets house trained This takes a long time with ANY puppy and yorkies take notoriously LONGER than usual, so patience is a must and you cannot get frustrated. That's what comes with owning a dog...a lifelong commitment :D ...how often should i bathe her You can give her a bath once a week or every other week, but depending on how old she is, you may want to wait till she's at least 10-12 weeks ??? ...and she doesnt like her toys very much.. any advice? I wouldn't be too concerned about that. She'll play if she's ready. You need to make sure she is loved and you are working with her on the pottying and bonding with her. Welcome to YT...can't wait to see pics of your puppy and hear more about her :) |

As for the shaking... Is it like she's cold or scared? If she seems chilly make sure she has blankets to snuggle in and get her a sweater. House taining??? Hmmmm.... depends on you! Stay diligent, on schedule (before nap, after waking, after eating) being consistant is the key! Bathing... I give my girls a bath evey 2 weeks but some people give them more often. Super important to get her used to the blow drier before you give her the first bath. Take her to the bathroom with you and turn on the drier but not near her to get her used to the sound and the blowing wind. You ALWAYS want to blow dry a puppy so they don't get cold. They are so small, that even indoors, they can get hypothermia. The puppy is still young and doesn't have a sense of toys if they are tossed away from them or if the toy is too far away. Try putting the toy on the floor and tease her with it by moving it back and forth in front of her and tickling her with it. - Puppies usually likes the softer stuffed animal type of toys more than the plastic or latex toys. It will all come in time! Congratulations on your first Yorkie! |
Welcome to YT! I hope these answers help :) ...well she cries and shakes alot, its probably just because she's scared right? she's probably just scared and nervous because she's in a new unfamiliar place ...how long, do you guys think, before she will get use to being with me. after a few days your pup should be adjusted to the environment ...oh and she sleeps alot. thats okai right? puppies sleep a lot ...how long will it take before she gets house trained depends on how you train your pup and how consistent you are with them when training ...how often should i bathe her probably once a week ...and she doesnt like her toys very much.. any advice? she'll play with the toys when she's ready Best of luck to you and your fur baby! :D |
Congratulations on your first Yorkie! We have loved every minute that we have had Bella (she is almost 5 months). We are new owners too, so I don't have a lot of advice. How old is your sweetie? Be sure to post pictures! We love to see cute Yorkies? About the shaking--be sure she isn't cold---put her in some pajamas or a sweater. Be sure she isn't hypoglycemic--which can happen in puppies. How is she eating? Bella is working hard on her potty training, but still has accidents--mostly when I am not paying attention to how long it has been. Bella loves her toys, but I'm sure yours will too when she gets comfortable with her surroundings. I would just say---love her tons and tons. She is a baby and needs lots of attention and love. Also, tons of patience. Right now, Bella is curled up with my 10 year old and both of them couldn't be happier. Yorkies bring tons and tons of joy and deserve all the love in the world. Enjoy your sweet furbaby and everything will fall into place with consistence and patience! Can't wait to see pictures! |
:welcome4: Glad you found us! You have already received many wonderful responses. This is a great place to learn about yorkies! Just a couple things to add - the reason you may want to put clothes on your baby is that yorkies have hair not fur like other animals & often need help keeping their heat in. Also, not sure what method you are using for housebreaking you may want to consider crate training - one of the most successful ways to work with a puppy |
thanks for all the advice!! =] i will be sure to remember them well dwe ji is 11weeks old right now she shakes when shes eating and cries when she first wakes up and before she goes to sleep and throughout the night when she wakes up. and getting used to me as in not so scared of everything in the house and getting used all its new things and her toys... you guys are so right, i put it closer to her and she's pushing it a little with her nose =] i take dwe ji out side for walks after each meal [ but she doesnt eat very much ] and and when she wakes up and goes to sleep but she doesnt always go when we're outside and she goes on the carpet when she gets inside or ill turn around for one second and she pee'd -__-" and like i said she doesnt eat very much, i give her innova softened up with some milk. but she'll only eat 4- 6 pieces and she wont eat anymore... even treats. =\ and drink really little water. oh another question.. what kind of treat should i give her? thanx again guys, you are helping me so much |
when they are in a new space and away from mom, they are like babies sleep alot and they are scared, and gradually after a little while get her used to noises and socialize her well after she has most of her shots. I would take chester to petsmart and around people, kids and other dogs. I would take her to a puppy class after most of her shots, persmart is pretty good. The potty training can take awhile, be diligent, they are smart and very stubborn, at least chester is. |
solid gold has good treats they are called turkey jerkey, they are soft and low fat, they are little burgers they will eat theit treats and will not eat dog food. jsut be careful they can choke easily |
First of all, have you taken her in to the vet yet? If not, do you have an appt. to get her in? ...well she cries and shakes alot, its probably just because she's scared right? Try putting a little stuffed animal in the crate or xpen with her at night..is she sleeping in either ? ...how long, do you guys think, before she will get use to being with me. give her a couple weeks, she will know this is her home. ...oh and she sleeps alot. thats okai right? Mine is going on 15 weeks and she sleeps a lot still, most dogs do..think I read somewhere where they pretty much sleep close to 20 hours a day..and that's about what mine do.. ...how long will it take before she gets house trained.depends on how consistent you are, and if you're training on pee pads or outside..my little one is already about 99% housebroken, and I haven't even had her 4 weeks yet. ...how often should i bathe her...I have mine groomed about 3-4 times a year..I have seen a lot of damage done to yorkies hair later on in years because of over bathing..you can wipe them down with wipes they sell at the petstores occasionally if they get stinky.. ...and she doesnt like her toys very much.. any advice? She will get used to them..just be patient..it's just like having a newborn baby around. and i had alot more to say but now i dont remmeber. keke, well any advice at all would be greatly appriciated. thanx alot!!. ^________^" __________________ cindy kwon <3 dwe ji kwon |
thanx guys all your advice is great =] i got my yorkie from a breeder, and she has had her first 2 shots... how many shots is she suppose to have before its pretty much had most of her shots? i put some stuffys into her bed, she's taking naps in her bed now but she still cries when she goes in and whines until she falls asleeps. but at least shes goingin now. thanx =] but she still cries and shakes at throughout the day. well when she wakes up she goes outside and after she eats to shes outside andbefore she goes to sleep and i make sure i go with her. but she still has accidents in the house and sometimes she'll hold it till she gets back to the house and then goes pee on the carpet. she bites everything but her toys how to do you crate train? im learning alot from this thanx guys |
Welcome! It sounds like she just needs some time to adjust to her new home |
...well she cries and shakes alot, its probably just because she's scared right? depends shes probably stressing! have nutrical on hand you can buy it at petco! It will help if your baby gets too stressed out. Also how old is your baby??? and how much does she weigh? ...how long, do you guys think, before she will get use to being with me? Give her lots of love and comfort. Dont let her get too stressed. Let her get used to you before shes passed around by friends and family that come over. too much excitment is not always good. ...oh and she sleeps alot. thats okai right? Of course lol shes a growing baby! make sure she gets plenty of rest ...how long will it take before she gets house trained this depends! some yorkies are never really house broken they are stubborn lol! just be very persistent! i never crate trained mine. My oldest hardly ever has accidents but my other is still a baby and we are working on it. Like i said be persistent and patient! always praise them for peeing or pooping outside! Try to always catch them in the action if they are using it in the house because this will help them learn better what they are doing wrong. Dogs tend to forget what they did wrong. Ceasar millian (dog whisperer says if you take your dog outside to use the bathroom dont keep him/ her outside more then 15 mins because they will forget what they went outside to do. Wait 15 mins outside if nothing bring in for about 10 mins and try again! ...how often should i bathe her Most of us on YT bathe once a week. I bathe every saturday! ...and she doesnt like her toys very much.. any advice? my baby pup kiele doesnt like toys either but i think thats her personality! Your baby is getting used to everything but i think eventually she will play with them unless she is like my baby lol! Just be patient and dont try to force her too much (unless shes not eating then thats a subject to push on) Most yorkies are allergic to corn. Dont feed grapes, raisens, onions, or a lot of garlic. You can do research on here about good dog foods and treats. Use a harness not a collar! small breed dogs have small tracheas (sorry for the spelling (area where our adams apple would be) and if they are pressed or pulled on too hard they can collapse! thats all i can think of! other than that enjoy your baby and i hope you learn a lot on here! Yorkies are so much fun! |
also!!!!!!!! she needs to be taken out like every 15 to 30 mins depending on her age but this is for a puppy! please if she is shaking a lot get her some nutrical she might be getting low sugar from the stress of going from one place to another! you can also substitute this with kayro syrup until you get nutrical! when my oldest was a baby he was small so i would put a little big of kayro syrup i his water. |
Our little one is going on 5mo.old now and I still watch for signs of hypoglecmia. If she is shaking and you don't have nutrical or if the vet hasn't given you anything for it, just put alittle Kayro syrup on your finger and let her lick it off. We feed ours small meals, about 4 or 5 times a day to keep her from going into hypoglemcia. It may be she is just scared and misses her mama and littermates but I would be real careful about how often she eats and the low blood sugar. Good luck and hope she does great. |
I know when I brought my Callie girl home, she shook all the time, not hypoglycemic but, just nervous. She shook and shook until she got used to her surroundings. Best of luck with her. |
I too am a newbie - never had a pet. Cindykwon, may I suggest a book that's been VERY helpful in my research and preparation for our new baby who will join us at the end of the month: Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies. The book is addicting, just like this forum! :D |
You've received some excellent advise so I will just welcome you and Josie Bishop to YT. |
You have gotten some great advice already!! so, I will just say welcome to YT. Hope you have a great life with your furbaby and we hope you stay around as your baby grows up!:D |
Cindy, they are required (in the last year) to have 4 sets of booster shots now. After that, the puppy shots are done. a lot of people crate train, I prefer an xpen, that way I can control what size to make it..when they're real young, you can make it big enough to put their bed, water, food and pee pad in, I would use this until they're 100% housebroken and through their chewing stage. If they get house broken early, they still need to stay in the xpen to keep from chewing wires, etc. If you want to know how to crate train, there are websites that will tell you exactly how to do it..I just never could bring myself to putting them in a little tiny crate, but a lot of people do...good luck with your baby |
Hi and Welcome to yt:) So much info and great advise here:) sounds like you are doing things right;) post pics, we would love to see your baby:) |
you have received a lot of great advice. the only thing I want to add is that if you are taking her outside to potty, DO NOT let her come in until she has gone potty. and AS SOON as she goes potty, bring her in and praise her. This may be hard if it is cold where you are because you will be cold, she will be cold, and you will both want to go inside :) I got maggie in December and she hated being outside (so did I) but this turned out to be a really good thing. She realized that if she potty's outside, she can go back in. So after a few days, once she realized that, she would immediately potty when i took her out. if you are crate training, you need to be sure that you do let her out immediately when you wake up or if you have been going. first thing you do when you get home or wake up. and no play time between the crate and the door. she goes out immediately. this will teach her sooooo many things. i believe crate training is the best way to go if you are not using the potty pads (which i have never used). good luck!! puppies are a lot of work but it is really worth it in the end. you will have a wonderful companion for many many years to come!!!! |
Hi and welcome! I don't post much but I certainly do find myself on this site ALOT! You need to soften his food with warm water instead of milk. Milk is hard for dogs to digest. I've had my puppy for just 2 weeks but have had dogs all my life. Just snuggle him, be consistent, and keep asking questions..you've come to the right place! |
Welcome! You have already got the best advice :) A couple of things I would add... I didn't read if she is on Puppy food. If not, I would put her on a puppy food. Toys - Lucy wouldn't play with her toys when I brought her home. I figured out they were too big and bought some toys for tiny dogs and a ball small enough for her and away she went! I also spent A LOT of time on the floor eye level with her so she wouldn't feel overwhelmed with me standing over or even stooping down to her. I have always crate trained my dogs in the past but with Lucy I decided to try confining her to the kitchen (we have a very large kitchen). I put down pee pads for her (the smelly kind) and rather than a typical bed I bought a soft sided travel crate/pup tent for her bed. I knew I was going to be traveling a lot with her and wanted her to be used to a crate-I just left it open. When we travel, it folds flat and she has her bed with her and is used to being confined for flights. One more thing I did that some agree and some don't. I kept her at my side every single moment possible. I carried her to the bathroom, anywhere in the house I was and she slept with me from day one. We only had one accident in five months. So, she got to see everything for the first time from my arms. Some dogs are prone to separation anxiety-she was not. Now that she is older she is independent but she checks in with me all the time. I'm of the mind that you can't love them too much :) Biting? From the day she came home the first word she learned was "no bite" and if I had a dime for every time I have said those words in the past five months I could buy a Latte for every YT member :) Have fun with your new puppy! Love, patience and love - and then more patience was and is the key for me... Warm wishes, |
