Thanks everyone for all the advise. I think that I will get rid of the pee pad. Snicks does not use it that much just to poop on every once in a while. He would always much rather go outside. He just loves it out side. I can't imagine keeping a dog inside all the time, I myself am an outdoor person. I am also a stay at home mom so when I do leave the house it is not for more than 4 hours at a time. I am lucky to be able to stay at home. My dogs (snickers 5.5 month yorkie and Seamus 6 yr Boxer) both look forward to my youngest child nap time. Nap time is frisbee time for them for about an hour, no matter the weather. They also go for a 30 or 2.5 mile walk everyday (and yes my yorkie is able to go all the way), the exercise is good for my whole family.
As for having run of the house at such a young age, my vet has advised me when my boxer was a puppy (boxer puppies have jaws of steel are very dominate and smart as a whip) to never buy any toys that will confuse your dog. They can not tell the difference between their stuffed animals and your children's. So my dogs have a giant basket of Bully Bones every shape and size.
My vet is great and I trust her. She is very big into going back to the basics. Feeding raw foods and establishing a pack family. The house IS the Den and they should not be allowed to soil their den. She believes that dogs are still very much like wolves. They need set rules, lots of different kinds of exercise (mentally and physically), and love.
I guess I will have to watch snickers more and maybe even start putting his poop in a certain stop in the yard so he knows where to go.

Sorry this is so long. This site is great!!!

I've never used wee wee pads, because I didn't want to confuse them and it works really well.

the pee pads have never confused mine..

I think pee pads work depending on your situation and maybe the age of your dog as well. Meka is only 8 mo's and I know she cant hold it all day "yet". Not to mention she still gets up around 3 am to potty. I know if I took it away she wouldnt know what to do... She does go outside as well, but with the rainy season coming, that wont happen daily. Pee pads work for us :)

Everyone's situation is different. It sounds like some cannot or would not ever do without the pee pads and it sounds like others do not care for them. I say, do whatever works for you. I do not want Buddy to potty in the house (on a pee pad) but I might feel differently if I was gone during the day. I am a stay-at-home-mom so I am always here to let Buddy out to potty.

I'm a stay at home wife...I had a shih tzu years ago, she was housebroken outside, didn't have a fence at the time, well, a car came over on my lot line and ran her over, I missed 3 days of work, and when I got my next shih tzu, I said never again would I let one out, and I've kept that promise to myself. I started out with newspaper with her, she trained so well, then switched to the pee pads, it was so nice being able to go away for a day, once in awhile even a night, and not have to worry about being home to let the shih tzu out...now, I have a fenced in back yard, and 4 inside and 2 outside dogs, I take them out and let them run every night for about 10 minutes, that way they get their fresh air..they will once in awhile potty outside, but, they know when they're in the house, it's to the pee pads..

Thats all we use. I do put them in a play tent & they work great. I used to have a picture of it, but I lost it. It should be in a thread on here on potty tent or what does your house look like? Check it out. We have fire ants down here & the last thing I need is to have them step in a mound & get bit.

My baby will only go poo poos (sorry that's the word I use :) ) outside in her pen on the pee pad. I have a little portable pen, and have a pad in there all the time.

She would only pee in there too for the longest time, but at least will pee on a walk now. never never poo on the walk......not sure what that is about???? But it is what it is I guess :)

I got rid of my pee pads, because Kalina doesn't use them, she's trained to go outside. Meanwhile I have a whole case of them. :( I think your Vet is right, but I would leave out ONE pee pad until he is trained to poop outside.

I'm training my Mocha to go on pee pads, only because it's freezing outside this time of year. When spring comes and it's warmer out, I would like to start taking him outside. I hope this won't confuse him. Does anyone have Yorkies that go potty outside in the spring and summer months, and only goes inside in the winter?

flutterby 11-09-2007 01:14 PM

I'll only ever use pee pads again... My last girl was stolen out of my yard and I refuse to go through that again..

Baby Madeleine 11-09-2007 01:26 PM

I've never used pee pee pads. Madeleine loves it outside so much and will go and sit by the door and wait for me to take her out to play. She is 6 months old and has an accident here and there but it is not enough to start using the pads.

I don't think you can train it to be seasonal....
Taking away pee pads in the spring/summer and putting it back in winter would probably confuse them. Also, the problem with having a dog trained on both pee pads and outside is that they won't be use to holding it.

What you can do to make them PREFER going outside is to treat ONLY when they do their business outside. Then they only go on the pee pads when they really need to because they would rather hold out for the treat by doing their business outside.

I don't know what I would do without the pee pads.

I got Sass when she was 8 weeks old and immediately bought a doggie litter tray and put the pads in it.

After the first week she never pottied in her crate again. There were a few accidents in the house in the beginning, but now she is just doing great and she will be 18 weeks on Sunday.

I am home with her all day, but love the ease of her using the pee-pads and she wakes up at least 1 time at night and I don't have to bring her outside because she has her pee-pads inside. yay!

I can understand why some people prefer their dogs to only go outside though.
