Hi, I'm new to the sight. :aimeeyork I just love it here I have been reading for hours. [F][/FONT] My little yorkie is two years old. She is a doll baby, but we've had nothing but health problems with her from the get go. Bought her from a supposedly good quality breeder, but her vet says she has a liver shunt. They didn't think she would make it a year and she is still with us. She's had a couple close calls but has always pulled through. I take her to two different vets. One of which gives her acupuncture. Don't laugh, it really works. If she is late on her monthly treatments she gets listless fast. I highly recomend acupuncter, and a lot of love. Has anyone else had problems with their babies having liver shunt problems? I hear it happens to Yorkies alot. Which I didn't know that. If so, what ages are your little ones? Do you do anyting special to help them survive? Any knowledge would be much appreciated. My bset to you and yours. JanetL:aimeeyork |

Welcome to YT - I think you will love this warm, informative forum. I totally believe in acupuncture!! It saved the life of one of my Bichons when he had a stroke and was paralyzed. Others here have also had success with treatments. |
:welcome4: |
Welcome to YorkieTalk.:) Is the shunt intrahepatic or extrahepatic? |
Welcome to YT! Let's see pics of your baby! |
Welcome!! :wavey: |
Thank You all so Much! Hi, You are all so very kind!:) I did post some pictures of Priscilla but I'm not sure where. LOL I haven't yet got the hang of things. Yes, my contact with the breeders was "Hey, they knew nothing about her liver shunt! She had a well puppy check before you got her and she was fine" But according to her vets, it is a genetic disease. So at least I know I didn't cause it. Oh yes they would take her back, but not help pay for medical expenses! There is no way we could ever give her up! We love her so much. So we do our best and take it day to day. Of course she is spoiled rotten. Her next check up is Nov. 15th. I will keep you posted. Again Thank You all for your good thoughts and helpful information. :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :aimeeyork |

Which Shunt? Quote:
Thank You for your interests. JanetL:animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :aimeeyork |
You should most definately find out. It is very serious. Intrahepatic (inside the liver) shunts are not operable and you just support the dog. Usually extrahepatic (outside the liver) shunts are operable and it has to be done. Usually Yorkies get extrahepatic. There is also MVD (microvascular dysplasia) which is little shunts that can't be repaired. How does your vet know that your dog has a shunt? What tests were done? What are the symptoms? |

She vomits alot, and when she is feeling badly her potty training goes right out the window. One of the first signs she is having a bad day. Thank you for caring. MY Best to you! Janet:animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :aimeeyork |
That's all I'd need. Thank God mine are healthy. |
I'm sorry to hear that.:( You might want to sign up with this group: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ They will have ideas for you. Quite a few YorkieTalk members (including me) are members there. |
