A stranger just picked my baby up!!! I posted a thread about this not long ago too!! and it just happened tonight! I was out walking Pixie on her harness when a lady came walking towards me, Pixie was bobbing up and down on the end of the lead like puppies do as they want to greet EVERYONE! and this lady bent down to fuss her and was asking questions about her, well...before i knew what was happening she had her hand under Pixie's chest and she was up in her arms in a flash! all i could say in my surprise was, 'OH! Please be careful! she wriggles alot!' she said 'It's ok, i'm used to dogs' and she just held onto her while still chatting away to me, the whole time i just wasn't listening to be honest as i was having kittens the whole time! I just held her on a very short lead thinking if she fell i could at least break her fall! What is it with people!! I know i'm over cautious probably but she's so weeny and fragile, one small fall could break her leg. |
eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwww!!!! leave my baby alone!!!! |
Thats terrible, I really hate people doing that, they should have the manners to ask before stroking her, let alone picking her up! |
You handled it MUCH better than I would have. I would have grabbed my baby out of her arms and let her know very quickly that I didn't appreciate her picking her up. I AM overly cautious and proud of it too. |
ohh noooo! What gives people the right to just handle her! She's yours! I had someone once pick up my skin child like that when he was 2. I freaked out and grabbed him right back. I was furious with this lady. I am sure she meant no harm, but who really knows?! I'm sorry you had to go through that.:animal36 I bet you carried her all the way home, I would have;) |
I don't know what makes people think they have the right to do something like that. They wouldn't just walk up to a stranger and then pick up their baby like that....why do it to somebody's pet? I know I would never have the guts to do that. You must've been sooo nervous. I even get nervous when people I know hold my little Mocha. I'm always afraid they might squeez him too hard or they might drop him when he starts to wiggle around. It's natural to be over protective of these little ones. |

Walking on a lead on the sidewalk, enjoying an outing with your dog as we all like to do, maybe I can help give you some pointers. When someone approaches who looks like they could be friendly, shorten the lead so your Yorkie is right there with you. As you approach and if it looks like the stranger wants to stop and approach/chat whatever, pick up the puppy first before the stranger does. You are now in control. If the stranger wants to hold the puppy, be strong enough to say no. You don't need an excuse just a firm no. You are lucky nothing happened AND you must be aware a dog snatching can happen just that fast. With your dog in her hands, a leash can be unsnapped or pulled out of your hand so fast. Be cautious, anything can happen nowadays and often does because of the element of surprise. I also never allow a stranger to give anything to any of my dogs out in public. You never know when some psycho could be out poisoning dogs. Crazy world we live in. |
Its okay to feel that way... People really go crazy for these lil Yorkies!!! I've wanted one since a teen, just because they were so darn cute to me. I never could have imagined the attention and popularity of the breed. So, with that said, I've been learning how to deal w/ situations like yours. I know how Meka is and they're just pups, so they cant help getting so excited... So, when we are being approached by someone, I pick her up before they reach us. That way, if they want to pet or compliment her - she's in my arms and its by my lead. :D |
Thanks so much everyone! i knew you would understand, She just took me by surprise as she did it so quickly! Pixie was happy to meet her but as soon as this lady lifted her she looked a little nervous.:( Thanks for the advice too, from now on i need to be more vigilant, if someones looks interested i will be picking her straight up before they do! sometimes i think i'm just TOO polite! |
I would have politely ask her to put my baby down. Most people understand when I don't want them to hold Rockie. |

I should have grabbed her back pronto! If people ask to hold her i usually say 'no, sorry' then explain why, but this lady didn't give me a chance! |

I will also usually grab my fur-baby before someone gets to us that is eyeing her. I sometimes don't even let them pet her & I will say "she is not friendly to strangers". It all depends on how I feel about the person at that moment... |
i dont even let people PET my dogs without them asking i think people think if you have them out its public property & guess what there NOT !! i would have screamed at her lol |
that happens every time this little girl ,carol, sees my sophia. and shes the most fast moving kid ive ever sees. she doesn't even ask. then she walks around with her and tells people that its her dog. and the whole time sophias whimpering because all my pets are scared of her!!!!i cant stand this girl. and shes 11!!! she should know better!!!!! |
People have no right to pick up your furbaby, as they have no right to pick up a skin baby. Some people are just rude. |
I think thats rude, and I would have def said something. |
Oh, that would have made me so mad! I don't know why people think they can just walk over and pick your dog up like that! With all the yorkies that have been stolen lately, I wouldn't trust anyone picking up my baby! What if they took off running with him/her? What I usually do to try to avoid people picking mine up is to pick them up and hold them before they even get a chance. |
I would have just took her & said I'm sorry I am overly protective but she couldnt be replaced so.... |
I don't blame you for being upset! Don't people think? I doubt anyone would be brazen enough to do that with a human baby. What really scared me is that with all the sick people out there, how were you to know this woman wouldn't just unclip her collar and run off with her? You wouldn't be able to stop her if she'd parked a car close. It's sad, but with the cost of these toy breeds, they are always prey to dognappers. Good heavens, you even hear stories of people breaking into pet stores to steal these dogs! |
We are the same way....my heart just stops when someone touches are babies. |
After reading this I would like to bring this scary thought to your attention. We got Jack (rip) our Maltese in 1976 as a puppy. He went everywhere with us. We spent our summer weekends in a resort town where our sailboat was slipped. On one trip as we were walking out by the lighthouse I let Jack out of my sight for only a second. He was on the retractable leash set at 6ft and he had been in front of me, as usual. Somehow (probably smelled something fishy) he got in back of me & I felt the leash go slack and Jack was crying. I turned around and an older woman had picked him up and was trying to undo his leash from his collar!!!! I asked her what she was doing with my dog and she said that she thought he was alone???and was going to find the owner??? I snached him back so fast and told her that I was going to report her to the local police for trying to take my dog. She left rather quickly. I reported the incident to the local police and they knew exactly who I was talking about, they had trouble with her and dogs before. I let them handle it. My point is, wherever you walk with your dogs, please be aware of who is around you at all times. |
I know exactly what you are talking about.. I needed to run into Wal-Mart quickly I had Max with me, my daughter said she would take him over to the grass so that he could pee. On her way back to the car a couple walked up to them and the man bent down and picked Max up before she could even say hello. I was on my way out the door and believe you me I was not happy nor was I nice...First you do not walk up to a teenage girl with a dog and you never pick up some one elses dog without asking. His wife or whatever said "I tried to tell you not pick it up" lol He said he was thinking about getting a yorkie..."I said get one of your own and you will understand why we do not want strange people holding our dog!" I don't understand how people can be so rude! |

Never trust a stanger! Anyone at streets approaches my babies, I don't even wish that they touch my babies until they ask politely. Our babies are not some kind of toys for them to play with, if the babies get contaminated somehow, who is going to get suffered, the parents of babies and the babies themselves. We must be very careful in the public nowadays, nobody knows what is going to happen even everything is in order, just be alert all the time, it is sad that people are not trusty these days. There is nothing we can do about this, we can only protect our babies as much as we could. |
I had a bizaar episode at my bank this past weekend. I brought my Baby in to pay my mortgage and the ladies all love him there. He sits up on the counter and they give him a cookie while we do our banking. Well this one teller (who I have never seen before) reached over and picked up Ozzy and said I have to show him to the girls and walked into the back room vault area!!! I was freaking out. This woman I didn't know took my baby and left the room  I didn't handle it well I just stood there asking the teller who was helping me can you please get my puppy for me. The woman came back out but I was completely shocked by her behavior. My fault for letting them get to close I guess. THAT won't happen again. |
I feel for you! You have the right to be mad. I am the same way, very overprotective. There are so many people who are nuts and there are the dog snatchers too! When I walk Maxi and meet people who have dogs I just bend over and talk to them. Then if the owner is comfortable with me petting them I will but I never ever pick any dogs except my own. When I am outside without Maxi and see other dogs I just talk to them and say how cute they are. Quote:

how rude is that. i would have freaked out. |
I guess I'm lucky, we live in a small beach community in So Cal and it is a VERY pet friendly community... They have dog parades on most holidays! Anyway, since it is so pet friendly, people get it.. They do not try and handle your dog.. They will pet Roxi, but if they want to pick her up they ALWAYS ask!! A lot of the time they ask just to pet her... it's really nice... |
