New Owner ?'s I am going to pick my baby up on Friday. This is my first Yorkie and I have read and re-read and still reading about how to take care of him. The one thing I cant find though, is now that the weather is getting colder is it too early to take him outside to potty train? He will be 6.5 weeks old when I get him? Should I use papers or pads or should I take him outside? Thanks to anyone who can help me answer this question? :aimeeyork |
He is too young to take out. I would use pads untill Spring |

You're already risking the health of your baby by taking him away from his mother and siblings so early, so I wouldn't risk it any more by taking him outside where he can be exposed to germs and cold. |
It would be good if the little baby could stay a little longer with his momma & litter mates - another few weeks is so important for bonding, learning skills including house breaking. If you must get him now - go ahead & try taking him outside, if he does his business outside praise him. I believe in using the potty pad near the door you will take him out, such as the back door. Also, consider how you will train. Will you crate train and/or use potty bells. pepe mint lives in tenn. & I think she's selling potty bells & trained her Maggie to use them, so she would be a good resource for you when you get to that point |

Make sure you have corn syrup or nutrical on hand...I never needed it when I got mine, but, at 6 weeks, she was already close to 2 lbs. make sure she is eating and drinking(the vet told me the other day to free feed when they're a small puppy)..I use the pee pads and love them..it's up to you as to whether you want to pad train or outside train, but, I love the inside training, this way, I don't have to be on any certain schedule if we want to go somewhere for the day, but, that's strictly up to you...good luck, can't wait to see pictures.. |

Thank you Thank you to everyone for your warm welcomes to YT! I appreciate them all. I tried to post some pics on here last night but it wouldnt work. I will keep trying. As far as my baby being too young, with all the messages I got I started to worry so I called my Vet. She said that he isnt too young. Around 4 weeks the mom starts to ween already and once she is finished the puppies are very independent and really dont need their mom. He isnt nursing much now and isnt even in the same area with his mommy. He is using the paper too. I also spoke with a very close friend who brought her baby home when she was 6 weeks and she has not a problem with her at all. I want to say thank you for your concerns and messages. It did make me think and find out for sure I was doing the right thing by him. Thank you all so much.. I cant wait to bring him home! :D |
my ex vet says the same thing on his website, 6 weeks.. I think sometimes staying with their littermates teaches them more bad habits...! |

We have so many new members who come on here after losing their puppy because they got him/her too young. I just don't understand some breeders :( Make sure you monitor him at all times. He is too young to maintain his body heat and blood sugar. You must keep him warm at all times, feed him every few hours, and try to minimize stress. Any of these things could bring on a case of hypoglycemia which can easily be fatal. And it can happen very quickly. I would never bring a puppy home this young if given the choice but I wish you the best of luck. |

needs to be with momma? He isnt with his momma anymore. And there wasnt a litter, just a sister and he protects her a little but thats about it. I have been with him a lot to watch his behavior and learn his patterns. He has been to the vet twice already and is getting his first set of shots this week. I understand that some breeders like to keep their babies til they are 8 or even 12 weeks and I have no problem with that. I worry about the health and well being of my baby, I love him to pieces already. But I trust my vet completely. She has been with my family for years and all of my friends with babies see her too. I know all about the stress, kennel cough, hypoglycemia, parvo, keeping him warm, all the things that little ones are at risk of. Thank you for your concerns and god bless you all for taking such good care of all your babies. They are so precious.... |
Biting! I have found the 11 week one bites a lot more, probably from the playing with the littermates, now, the one that is going on 5 never did chew on my fingers or anything else...I really know this is a sticky subject, always has been, but, I've always had my pups at 6 weeks for the most part, and never had any problems..well, I did have one(a maltese), but, I think the breeder lied, and said she was 8 weeks when she wasn't even six weeks..she was under a pound and did have hypoglycemia..almost lost her..but, heck, her teeth weren't even in yet..My yorkie at 6 weeks did fantastic..but, she also had her teeth and was eating very well.. |

I am not getting my pup until she is 12 weeks old, that is what the breeder and the vet both recommend. Good luck with your new baby .... |

Wow..as a future vet (I'm in vet school), 6 weeks is way too young to be away from its mommy and littermates. I would like to see any puppy (no matter the size or breed) be with its littermates until 8 weeks and small breed dogs until 10-12 weeks at least. I can't believe a vet would say 6 weeks is okay...they must not be familiar with toy breeds...or they are stuck in the "old mindset" that 6 weeks is the time to go. No way would I bring home a 6 week old yorkie... |

Welcome to YT. You have chosen to come here for advice there are years of experience and knowledge here. I hope u will be open to what everyone is saying. 6 wks is early. U say the baby is not even with its mother so why hasn't the breeder released the baby to u yet?? Consider waiting if possible. You would never forgive urself if the outcome was poor. Just something to think about. Good luck with ur new baby. |
