Can't tell from pictures Hi everyone. So I'm kind of curious about this, but how big are Yorkies in real life? I mean that whenever someone posts pictures, etc. you never can tell how big they are. I'm just curious because I want a smaller Yorkie, but I want to see how "big" is a small Yorkie when compared to something. I guess it's kind of like the Godzilla movies where they can make something small look super big.:D I want a smaller Yorkie because I will be traveling a lot and wanted something in the weight range of 2-4 lbs. So I'm curious how these different sized Yorkies look like when being carried by someone, etc. So if anyone can post pictures..... Thanks! |
I noticed you've been a member since 2005. Do you already have a yorkie? If so, what size is it? My yorkie is 12 pounds and she goes with us all of the time in the car and camping. 2-4 pounds is really small for a yorkie. The standard is around 6-7 pounds. You'll want to do a lot of research on the tiny yorkies before you think about buying one. There are a lot of experts on here who can give you excellent advice about this. Some of the tiny one's are healthy, but I've read about a lot of health problems & heartache w/ the tiny ones. |
Standard for a yorkie is 4-7 pounds so 2-4 pounds is small. My female is 3 1/2 pounds though & my male is about 4 1/2 -- and everyone comments on how small they are. Sometimes when their tiny they have more health issues & you have to be so much more careful. Please do your research before you buy one too small. |
You can see me holding my girls in my avatar. Angel is on the left and is 5 lbs, Sissy is on the right and is 4 lbs. |
No pictures but I can tell you my Jo-Jo is 8" tall and 8" long from the base of his neck to the base of his tail...he currently weighs 5 pounds but normally he only weighs about 4 1/2 pounds. My Riley is 9" tall and 9" long and he weighs 4 pounds 3 ounces. Riley is leaner than Jo...they are all built differently so you can't only go by weight. My boyz are pretty small...I don't think I would want one any smaller. |
Wow.....!!! I've been a member since 2005? That's a shocker. Nope, I still don't have a Yorkie. I'm still looking for one. I actually seriously started looking this past week. So far, I saw a little girl who was being sold because her owner was low on cash (maybe a scam?) and another who was supposed to be 2 lbs full grown and purebred (but was actually a Chihuahua mix). But before then, I've been looking at the breed standard, looking at pictures of well bred puppies, etc. to get an idea of what I want. I think I might look for something more in the 3-4 lb range. I don't have any small children or anything else that could potentially be dangerous for a tiny puppy. But trust me I will be looking really hard for anything that could be dangerous when I do bring a puppy home. I'm currently studying in Mexico, so I've been looking for a pup here. Californina, my home state, is notorious for overpriced puppies, even from BYB with puppies without registration. I want a tinnier one because I will be flying back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico and I don't want to have to put a larger puppy in a carrier that will get very uncomfortable very fast. Thanks for the replies. |
4 Attachment(s) I would be very careful buying such a small dog. One of my yorkies (Jake) is 4 lbs., 4 oz. and I definitely would not want anything smaller than him. It's too easy for them to get hurt. When I got Jake, he weighed 1 lb., 10 oz. and let me tell you, you have to watch everywhere you walk when you have a dog that small running around. We have a new yorkie (Jackson) who is almost 12 weeks and weighs 3 1/2 lbs. He's very small right now, but he is still growing and will be bigger than our first yorkie. I'm posting some pics here of my boys with people so you can get an idea of how small they are. 1. Jackson giving mommy kisses 2. Daddy and Jake 3. Jake with my daughter's boyfriend 4. Jake getting kisses from my daughter |
2 Attachment(s) maggie is 6 lbs. here she is next to my 6 year old girl who is roughly 40 lbs. and here she is next to my friends 60 lbs boxer....maggie is tiny in my eyes. i keep having people tell me she looks like she is more like 4 lbs max. i think she is perfect size. and she is not too heavy for me to carry everywhere. i take her to the flea market a lot and i carry her most of the time. it has never been too much for me to handle, she is super light in my eyes :) in fact, yesterday, i picked up a small turkey at the grocery store and thought it was like 2 or 3 lbs. looked at the label and it was almost 7 lbs!!! i thought "this thing weighs more than maggie but it seems sooooo light" so really....6 lbs is a great size. perfect in my eyes :) |
4 Attachment(s) Lacy is 7.5lbs The first three pictures are of her. The fourth one is me holding her and another yorkie that is 3.8lbs |
So cute.... Thank you everyone for posting the pictures of your beautiful babies. I keep going "awwwww" so much that I think my roommate is going to think I'm going crazy. :D Four pounds sounds and looks super tiny. I had a Yorkie about 13 years ago and I had no idea how much he weighed, but he was the best. Then I had a Rottie for the past few years, but she passed away 2 years ago on Thanksgiving. Now that I'm living on my own, in a small apartment, I decided on a Yorkie - well, I guess I decided on one about 3 years ago. Thanks again for your help everyone. I absolutely love this forum. I don't think I could have found a better place!!! |
Zoe is just about 5 lbs and I think she is tiny. She's smaller than my friends cat. My sister has a yorkie who is 10 lbs and I still think he is small. But I remember looking at pictures and not really realizing just how small they are. |

2lbs is really tiny. I wouldn't want to travel with such a tiny yorkie - too scary. |
2 Attachment(s) Slade is almost 6 lbs now and still pretty small and portable. when he was 2 and 3 lbs I was really scared to take him places he was so fragile In the pics below he was around 3 lbs in the first and 1.5 in th second. keep in mind i'm pretty small... 5 ft tall with hands the size of a 10yr old. |
1 Attachment(s) Natalie is a tiny... and trust me, you're better off in EVERY aspect if you have a little one who is at LEAST 4 lbs.... Ohhhhhhhhhhh but you guys!!!!! Natalie went to the vet for her follow-up today and she GAINED ANOTHER WHOLE OUNCE!!!! YAYYYYYY!!!! So that makes her 24 OUNCES now!!!!! A WHOLE pound and a half!!! I couldn't be happier!!!! If she keeps up at this rate of an ounce a week, I may have a "teapot" on my hands!!! LOL Okay, back to this.... Natalie is 6 and a half months old and, as you see from my rant above.... she is a pound and a half.... I'm PRAYING that she'll hit 4 lbs one day, but her vet says she'll probably never make it to 2 lbs. <grrrr> Here she is! (for reference, the envelope is 8" wide by 7" tall and she's standing up .... ) |

Well, I guess if you ever want to travel with her, you can just mail her. :D LOL! Maybe you can mail her to me? Just kidding. I'm hoping to have my baby soon. I'm super excited. I already have my online shopping cart at Walmart full of sweaters, etc. I told a friend that I wanted to buy some pajamas for my future baby because it might be cold on the plane. And he said that the baby would be fine without clothes and he laughed at me. My friends find it funny that I want to have the puppy wear clothes. I can't wait until my closet is completely over taken by puppy clothes! |

I just noticed how many posts in total I have...it's kind of sad but some people have been members for a shorter period of time and already have more posts that I do. :( :D I guess I'll need to fix that. |
I don't have a picture at the moment to share but will try to take some tomorrow evening to show you size differences. Bella is 2lbs 10 oz (might be a little more now, I have to weigh her) at 21 weeks old. She is very small IMO and I hope that we can get her up to at least 4lbs full grown. I was chuckling a bit cause my cat is WAY bigger then her, i'll have to take a picture of the 2 next to each other. She is smaller then my labs heads. :aimeeyork |
Rockie is 6 months and weigh 5 pounds. My daughter says he is big, I say so what. She thinks there are such things as tea cups and toys furbabies. I keep telling her thats just a advertisement ploy for money. I am satisfied with his weight.:) |

My Marcel is 2.12 pounds and Wylie is almost 8 pounds. I've traveled w/ both and it is MUCH easier w/ Marcel, obviously. I love Marcel's size - but I was so worried he wouldn't make it past 2 pounds - I still hope he makes it to 3 pounds. And, btw, "tinier" doesn't mean guaranteed health problems - you can have an unhealthy 8 pounder and a totally healthy 2 pounder, and vice versa. Tinier DOES guarantee that you have additional "cautions" you must take (ie, a fall from a couch can be fatal etc. - that's another subject). If you do want a smaller yorkie, just please DO NOT buy from someone who breeds for "tinies". Rather, you want to find a good, quality breeder who has a litter where there happened to be a little one. Tinies like that usually are much more healthy than "bred for" tinies. |
2 Attachment(s) Phoebe is 5 lbs and I think she is tiny...actually, Carson is 5 lbs too. Phoebe seems smaller to me, as she is slightly shorter in height and length. They are very easy to carry around. good luck! deb |
2 Attachment(s) Here's mine. The first one is Sugar who is three pounds. The second is Gracie, 9 lbs, Spike 4 lbs, and Sugar. There really isn't a huge difference just to looke at them but Gracie seems way sturdier. Sugar takes a lot more care than the other two and seems way more fragile. |
With the exception of Sebastian all mine are kind of small. |
1 Attachment(s) This is Zoeybear. She is Just under 5lbs. About 4lbs 12oz. She is lying next to a 19" monitor. I think she is the perfect size. |
zoey bear, did you keep track of her weight chart? If so, how much did she weigh at 12 weeks? That's about the size I am hoping Ginger gets too.. |
1 Attachment(s) My 2 are 3 1/2 lbs and 5 lbs. They look similar in size as Pixie the smaller one has long legs and Cali has a longer back so even by weight there an be a 5lb er that looks as small as a 3 1/2 lber. |
