Deverstated Hi. I'm so upset. Tilly is 10 months old. She has never had what I would call a true Yorkie coat. Its always been dry and brittle, apart from her head that is lovely and silky. Over the last couple of months her back hair and down her back legs has been snapping off and now it is really short. I took her to the vet and they tested her for mites and such forth. The results all came back negative. Today they rang me and said they think she has Short Hair syndrome of silky breeds, I think in a America you call it redleg? Im so upset. I know I should be happy she is well and not sick, but my dreams off a long flowing coat are over and I feel like im grieving. Does that sound selfish? I love Tilly and that will never change, but I still really feel bummed. Does anyone know of any treatment I could try? Could the vet be wrong Ive added some photos? Is it genetic? Should I tell the breeder? Sorry about all the questions. Suzy |
Suzy you forgot the pictures. |

I am also going through a very rough time because we just had a litter of 3 all born with the genetic disease called hypotrichosis. In this case, the male puppies are actually born bald on their foreheads. It is rare, so have been doing LOTS of research. I haven't found anything about short hair syndrome, but there is something called color dilution alopecia, that can cause hair loss. You might want to google that and see if any of those symptoms fit. If that is the case, there is no chance of hair regrowth, but the general health of the dog is good. Good luck and your puppy will be beautiful anyway!! |
To be honest those pictures do not resemble any red legged Yorkie I have seen. Maybe someone else can help you but the coloring appears wrong. A red legged Yorkie is just that, red legged in color with very thin hair. Tillie appears to be silver/blue like a Yorkie. Perhaps her diet needs to be changed? Maybe some supplements to aid in the condition of her coat. I am sure someone else can give you more suggestions. She's a cutie. Yes, I would tell the breeder about her coat. |
i tihnk she's probably a redleg from pictures i've seen of them. she has such a beautiful face though. you still might have a chance with a pretty coat, though. you can buy a supplement call Missing Link and put it in her food every day. someone posted a few months ago their redlegged yorkie after a year on missing link and it looked amazing |
No its not color dilution alopecia. I did ask him that. The vet said the symptons dont fit. |
....I am sorry to hear that she is having coat problems, but regardless Tilly has such an adorable face and looks so sweet!! Best of luck finding something to help her condition....keep us posted! |
Good luck. She is beautiful. |
Bella has short hair too. The breeder said she's a "short hair yorkie". Whatever that means. Anyhow, I'm ok with it cause I kinda like the short hair look better. =) |
Tilly really doesn't look like a redleg to me. Her hair is so pretty on her head, that it seems she is missing something in her diet, or she isn't processing her food right. I don't remember how old you said she was, but I think I would get her hair trimmed short, and go for some really high value food and supplements while it was growing out. I feed Sawyer food and suppliments from Healthy pets ( Life's Abundance), and it has made a difference in just a couple of weeks. I know you are craving the long silky coat; but if you trim her up even all around, you will not be so upset with the different lengths while it is growing. I also would use very good shampoos and conditioners on her, and keep her nails short enough that she doesn't rip her hair out when she itches. Hope some of this helps; but I wouldn't through in the towel just yet, and don't forget their coats change up to 3 years old, and sometimes longer. She is adorable!:) |
My Sophie has shorter hair also. I didn't think too much about it until you mentioned it. All I know is that she is really, really easy to groom. (And she does love to be groomed).... Your little furbaby is beautiful..... |
Sissy's hair was on the sparce side when we got her at 6mo. We started giving her Missing Link and it has improved. I can't say she has a long to the floor coat but she does have a nice coat and it is growing longer. She is 2 now and it's about half way to the floor. |
She doesn't look like a redleg to me. The hair on her legs would be red from the pictures I've seen of redlegged yorkies. She has such an adorable little face!! Can I ask what kind of food she eats and whether you give any supplements? Also, what kind of shampoos and grooming products do you use, and how often do you bathe her? Have you ever tried "Missing Link"? I use that in my boys' food, and their coats are shiny and soft and seem to even grow faster. I especially notice it with Jake since I've had him longer. Also, I've been using "Minksheen" shampoo, which makes the coat look beautiful. Maybe trying different products would be good, it's worth a shot. |
