What would make him react like this? I took Buddy for his second walk this am before leaving for work. We go the same way daily but his reaction when we got to a certain grassy area was shocking! He stopped sniffed nervously, his tail went under and his ears went back and he refused to move forward. There was nothing around. I looked and everything was completly uneventfull, to me. He pulled me back and turned and went the other way looking behind him as we walked, tail still tucked in. Something frightened him but there was nothing there. I went into the street and tried to go around the area but when we reached it, even in the street he reacted the same way and would not budge. He was scared to death but of what? This has never happened before and we walk the same area every day and have been for 3 1/2 yrs. He senced something I would think but what? Nothing was anywhere to be seen and I have never experienced his reaction to anything like this before. When I saw his tail tucked under him and his ears back and him slinking to the ground in fear I felt like something was there too but nothing was. Any ideas? I'm going back tomorrow to see if he reacts the same way. Really weird to me. |
Ohhh...that's spooky! You know it's almost Halloween so they say dogs/cats see things we don't. You never know - I believe in spirits so that could be a possibility. |
Wow... that sounds really odd. I wonder what it could have been for Buddy to act like that. Well, if you find out please fill us in :) Cause Im clueless... |
I' glad his reaction caused you to follow his lead. It's freaky how smart they can be in their sense of things. Better to just be cautious and not make them do something or walk where they do not want too. |
 I was thinking possibly a wild animal got ahold of something in that area last night and Buddy senced something wrong but it was a beautiful morning and nothing was there! I swear I have never seen anything like this. If it were nightime I would have ran for my life.:p Serioulsy why would a dog refuse to pass a certain point looking frightened to death in broad daylight? |
Spooks I tell ya, spooks!...lol:eek: |

Your too funny:D |
Made me wonder if there's a dead body lying in that area behind a bush or something. Is it a residential area or a vacant lot or field? Hmmm...I have no clue, but am anxious to hear if he does it again tomorrow. |
I bet it was the smell, perhaps the grass had been sprayed with pesticides or something. |
I think it was probably a smell, too. They have such a strong sense of smell - perhaps a new dog came by that he is unused to or an animal that he hasn't smelt before. |

I swear I thought the same thing but didn't want to say it. I going back when I get home and look around. It's a grassy area that's infront of woods. It is in the parking lot of an attached condo developement where I live. The grass was mowed on Mon and no pestisides put down this week. He's used to that anyhow because it happens monthly. |
Buddy, is letting you know something happened there or something is lerking. They are smart if he is scared, I would be too. |

Dog sense things that we can not hear, see or feel. It is good that Buddy let you kniow that there is danger around your area. Keep on watching the signs that he is giving you. |
I just want to know what could make him fearfull like this. He is not afraid of ANY dog no matter what the size. Two mins before this happend he threatened a rottie walking down the other side of the street. But that's Buddy. He don't know you, you get growled at. I have no clue what he could be afraid of. Nothing ever bothered him in the past. I will check the area when I get home tonight because it will still be light out and Buddy is going with me so we'll see if it happens again. Maybe someone will be around I can talk too to see if anything may have happened there but I don't think so becuse I live across the street. |
I've seen dogs act this way to the smell of blood. Whatever he smelled trust his instincts for the time being. It may save your life. |

Really? I think I'll look around there myself and leave him home. I am starting to be creeped out. Just found the whole thing strange never really thought about finding something! |
I would be afraid to look around by myself. It also could have been a snake you didn't see, or the smell of a wild animal that had passed in that area. They say there are all kinds of animals in suburbia now. I know it sounds silly, but some dags are very sensitive to emotional vibes too. maybe someone had a bad argument in that spot. In any case, I would trust his instincts, and avoid that spot, or have someone with me to check it out.:) |
Please do not go check out the spot by yourself. Bring a buddy. It's always better to be safe than sorry. |
It's really surrounded by condo's. Not secluded at all. The area runs the length of the parking lot for the complex. We'll see if any of my walking buddies are out with their furbabies. |
I am really anxious to hear, but be careful when checking the area out! This is creepy. Just now I took the dogs out to go potty, and Maddie looked up in the sky and started barking like crazy. I looked up and saw nothing. She finally quit...did her thing and then looked up and started barking again. Weird! What was she seeing? |
Holy Moly you too! Maybe the halloween goblins are flying around unseen by us humans and getting ready for tomorrow night:eek: LOL I'll spook myself out and never go check out that site. Don't let me get carried away here. |
That happens when Milo smells a buck. The other night we were out and he snapped around and wanted back in quick. I was like, :what?". Then I heard the snort nearby and back in we went! |
If it was in front of woods maybe there was or used to be something hiding there. |
If Buddy walks the exact same route every day, and has never done this before, then trust me, your little guy is telling you there is something there that is NOT right. The reaction you describe sounds like that whatever the cause, it is making him very fearful, especially if he is so used to that area. Let us know what happens today, but please do not go checking "in the woods" alone.:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown Lauren |
SPOOKY ..dogs know when something is adnormal... |
I'm really anxious to know what scared Buddy:eek: Like the rest, though, don't go alone! |
Wow that's weird. Dogs sense things that we can't. He probably smelled something, possibly a wild animal. Or, maybe there was a wild animal that is dead nearby. Try walking him again and see if he does the same thing. But, take someone with you just in case he sensed something dangerous. It's funny how dogs sense things. One time we had a Blue Tick/Lab who was always friendly and loved everyone. I never saw her not like anyone, she was just a big loveable bear. But, a cable guy came to fix a problem we were having, and she acted like she wanted to kill him. She would even stand in front of me and bark at him, like she was protecting me. I had to take her to another room and calm her down, but she really did NOT like the guy for some reason. I'm sure she had her reasons, but we couldn't figure it out. |
it's a ghost! |
