Walking on a Leash
 

Logan is almost 12 weeks old. Is he too young to learn how to walk on a leash? He won't do it, and I've been working with him several times a day every day. He just stands there, and I hate to pull him along. All the training material I've read assumes that the puppy will walk on a leash, so I'm at a loss.

Any suggestions?

You should do a search for "walk," i know i've seen postings on this before. My puppy took a little while to get the hang of walking on a leash too. Just keep at it!

I started Lucy inside the house and back yard only when I brought her home at 12 weeks. Just letting her drag around a light cotton leash some. I didn't take her outside to walk until she had her shots though and by that time she was used to a leash...

First thing I would try would be what KathyinCali suggested. Attach harness to puppy and let him walk around the house with it on, a few minutes at a time so he gets use to the sensation of something on him. Then after a few days of harness only, attach a light leash and let him drag that around for a few minutes at a time, a few times a day. Make sure you watch him though if he is free dragging the leash, in case he gets caught on something.

Now if he's ok with both leash and harness, he just doesn't walk when YOU hold onto the end of the leash and just sits there, then you position yourself beside the puppy and pull the leash up, so the puppy is sort of standing, then you move forward.

If you just pull forward, then you'll just end up dragging him.
So pull UP and forward, when he takes a few steps, praise lavishly and treat.
I hope that makes sense.

I did pretty much what others here are suggesting. I first put a collar on my puppy and left it on 24/7. He scratched at it and messed with it for a little bit but soon got used to it. I then let him drag the leash around when he was out of his crate. That still didn't teach him to walk with me but he wasn't worried about and fighting the leash when it was on him. I took him outside with me when we'd (me and the kids) walk to get the mail and I'd pull him along a few steps, then encourage him to come to me on his own. It took a couple days but in the middle of our walk he just "got it" and started walking next to me. If only he'd "get" potty training that easy!:(

Pop his harness on, let him get used to that and then attach the lead. Just let him drag it around the house first (obviously while you supervise). Then once he's ok with that, pick the lead up and encourage him to walk by tempting him with food or a toy. Praise him gently as he walks and give him his reward. If you start now he'll get the hang of it soon enough :)

My little Yoda wanted to chew on her leash in the beginning,I kept working with him, then when I actually took him out for a walk in the park, he walked so proud as if he were born on a leash.Now he looks forward to putting on his leash. Just keep on trying It will work. Good luck.:)

Thanks for all the good advice! I have been able to get him to walk just a bit on the leash - when HE wants to move. I'll try attaching the leash to his collar and let him drag it around awhile.

Put on his leash, carry him outside, set him down, show him a good treat, toss it about 2 feet in front of him. Repeat until he gets it. With good treats, even leashes are forgotten.

Amazingly, when I took him outside yesterday to try leash walking him again, he took off! He ran for I don't know how long, as if he just discovered his freedom! It was awesome. We walked again this morning, although he wasn't quite as energetic.

this is how i got my puppy to walk on a leash cause she was really resistant at the beginning. I had to let her feel like she was in control if that makes sense (like she was not on a leash). but to make her walk forward i had a treat in front of her! :D Then she would move forward and I would praise her and give her the treat. Soon she would be walking anywhere and every where. She got used to the leash. It's almost like a person with a fishing pole and at one end of it there was a treat. She would be going anywhere I wanted as long as the treat was infront of her. As she got used to the treat no more treat!

I am a mean daddy. I basically made my little boy know that i was the one in charge in every aspect of his life. he sleeps in a nice bed because of me, if he is bad i take the bed. He eats because of me, if he didnt eat his morning meal in the allotted time then he didnt get to eat till lunch. It sounds mean but it worked like a charm, even though your yorkie is so so so cute you have to remember that he may even be smarter than you at times, dont let him be and stay one step ahead of him. always stay consistant in everything you do from week 10 and on. this all transfers into walking your yorkie too. from day 1 my yogi had a collar on so he was used to it by the time we took him for his first walk. i put the leash on him in the park and he wouldnt budge, give him a little pat on the butt and pull lightly on the collar and say COME firmly. repeat repeat repeat. when he walks for more than 10 feet give him a treat and give him plenty of good boys and repeat. i took my yogi about 100 feet to master walking on a leash and has never looked back. your yorkie has to know who is boss, if you let your yorkie run wild then have fun posting your problems for years to come on this very forum.
