Just another crate training question Max will be 10 weeks old this Saturday. I've had him almost two weeks now. I've been doing strict crate training during the day but not at night. At night I put him in a playpen with wee-wee pads down and his crate in there. I have an 8 month old that just started sleeping through the night a little bit ago. Well until about 4am anyways when she wakes to nurse, but then goes back to sleep. My 2 year old wakes at 6am on the dot and is ready for the day. So needless to say, I just do not want to wake at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning for the dog to take him out. My question is this; about how old will he be when I can expect him to be able to wait to go potty until about 4:00 or 5:00? I take him out for the last time at around 10pm so I'm looking for a 6 or 7 hour holding time. I don't want to put him in the crate all night long before it's reasonable to expect him to hold it. |
I can understand where you are coming. Noah and Rickey are 6 months old. I cut back on their food and water. They can have no food after 6:30. I have one of those plastic water containers in the crate with a small amount of water so they can get a sip during the night. I'm going to take that away from at nine for now on because they pee pee during the night but do not poop. Some of the older members will have to answer your question. I don't think a puppy that young should go without food and water over a couple of hours. Hope you get some answers soon. Good luck. Pepper:animal-pa |
I reread my message just now and it kind of sounds like I was saying I had an 8 month old and 2 year old dog. I just have the 10 week old puppy, the 8mo old and 2 year old are my children. Just wanted to clarify that. :) |
When I got Bitsy at 9 weeks to about when she was 13 or 14 weeks, she was able to hold it all night (10pm to 6:30 am) most of the time. I would say about 2 or 3 times a week, she would wake up at around 1 am and need to go again. Then at about 14 weeks till today (she's 16 weeks now - so for the last two weeks+) she hasn't woken me up to go potty again in the night. I think all dogs are different though. I sleep with Bitsy in her soft crate beside my pillow, so when she needs to go, she'll whine so I always know when to take her out. |
Bella never woke me up to potty. She just woke me up to play!!! She has a doggie door now and I still hear her going out at night sometimes. However around 10 months she was more consistant with not waking us up. |
