Teaching the "sit" command I'm having trouble teaching our 11 1/2 week old Yorkie to sit. I have read books that explain the procedure...a treat or toy moved up and over the muzzle, causing the dog to naturally sit. The problem is that my baby does NOT sit; he backs up. Am I doing this wrong? Is there some other way that works better? |
you may be pulling it too far over his nose. Get his attention, bring the treat slowly up over his nose. If he doesn't sit, gently press his butt down. Once he sits (with your assistance or not :)) tell him 'good sit' (all happy and excited) and give him a treat. He should pick up after a few times. |
Lol. It sometimes takes a while, but once they get it on their own, its so cute. Anybody can tell my little guy to sit and he'll sit there and not move until someone tells him to. Its adorable. :p |
Try putting him close to a wall so he can't back up. |
It took Ollie awhile....he was about 5 months old before he got it. Thats a great idea about trying it in front of a wall!!! Ollie always backed up also. |
Backing him up to a wall does sound like a good option. I had little trouble with the sit command but I can't for the life of me get her to lay down. LOL |
Im trying this with Buster but all he does is try and jump for it! I swear he ate jumping jacks at some point  |

When teaching the sit command, I'd also try the wall. But also make sure that you're moving the treat over the nose very slowly. It should cause him to move his head more than immediately think he needs to back up not to miss anything. |

Bella totally does the What's in it for me look too. :D But if there is food in the room or she even remotely thinks I have a treat she is sitting her pretty little butt down fast, to the point that I don't even have to ask. Hmmmm who is trained here??!! LOL She does well with the take it/leave it command too. But she does so well that when I say leave it she heads over to my other hand for the treat she get's to take. I swear they are the smartest dogs ever |

ughhhhhh try an 8 month old! ughhh I just sigh because Georgia is soooooo stubborn... Maybe it is just my theory but I feel like helping her sit does not help the training. I just try to be patient and keep saying sit. When she finally does.....lol....I give her a treat. Right now I realized that chicken works best...the next best are little liver cookie things...I forget the name...I tried to put them a little over her head so she would sit but she does not do that. I also heard that it takes about 20 times before dogs understand....so we are only on about day 4 of it. Due to my traveling for work and just getting her acclimated to her new home. Anyway, I am glad I am not alone trying to do this...it's so tough! I was beginning to give up till I read this! |
Bella learned sit and down fast but I just cant get her to stay. for laying down i used the command down. I had to sit on the floor with her cus she is so low to the ground already. first i made her sit. with the treat in the closed palm of my hand (so she could smell it) i would extend my pointer finger toward her nose and then drag it to the floor slowly saying "down". she got it really fast. But, let me move just a little and she is up moving again! lol. I am open to any suggestions on that one! |
Wicket is 8mos and will sit when wicket wants to sit, He can sit and knows the command, The Jack Russell only know how to sit up, she has yet just to sit, I will tell you this Wicket (yorkie) will not sit on the tile floor, his botton never touching the tile, but he will sit on carpet. I believe he doesn't like cold floor. |
