Chain Store Training Has anyone ever used chain store obedience classes (Pet Co, Pets Mart)? I live in a small town and there are no trainers within a 45 mile radius that I can find, so I am about to go the Pet Co class route, but wasn't sure if it was worth the time. Toby is 7 months old and is extremely stubborn, so I need some help! Any info would be great! Thanks! |
I think it all depends on the trainers at the location, just like some petsmart groomers are good, others aren't. I have a friend that went to a petsmart for training and his dog is very well behaved. I'm going to enroll Rocky and Bella in Petsmart training as well because I met the trainer and really liked her. I would just talk with the trainer at your petco and see how you like them. Also see if you can contact their past students to see how they liked them. |
Chip has taken Beginner obedience at Pet Smart and I think it went pretty well. He is now enrolled in Intermediate at a new Pet Smart location which is alot closer, it seems to be going well so far. It all really depends on the trainer, most of the time you can find info on them by doing a google search. |
We attended obedience classes at a Petsmart in Tulsa at the 41st street location. The trainer, Amy, was a very good one. Very knowledgeable, pleasant and easy to work with. It was a good class for basic training. |
We were supposed to start puppy class at Petsmart this past Wednesday, but they didn't have enough puppies signed up so its not starting until 10/31 now. I've never done through Petsmart before, but I met the trainer and liked her a lot. And she gave me her home number in case I needed anything before we started class. |

I took my Golden Retriever to Petsmart classes and I really enjoyed them. Although he got kicked out of Puppy class (he already knew sit, stay, down, etc.) and bumped up to intermediate, we learned quite a bit. It's also a great oppurtunitie for socialization and learning tolerance of strange people and dogs. I would recommend it. I can't wait till Sarge has all his shots so we can go... |
Bella has been attending the petsmart puppy training for a little bit now. We really enjoy it and in all honesty it has taught me a lot about HOW to train her. I also really enjoying getting out of the house with her and doing something that she really enjoys. |
Unfortunately I had a bad experience at Petsmart. My Jack Russell was excited and continued to bark as the trainer was speaking. Finally she turned to me and said, "Can't you make him stop barking?!?" I thought that's why I was there! To learn HOW to make him stop barking. I ended up dropping out of the class. Yes...my dog is a puppy class dropout. I'm glad to hear that a lot of you have had good experiences. I've since moved and we live near a Petsmart. Maybe I will give them a try when I get my new little guy in December! |

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to enroll him and hope for the best! |
Spike did both the beginner and intermediate classes at PetSmart and we had a great time. I'm thinking about enrolling him in the advanced class! |
I guess it really does depend on the individual trainer. I went to my first puppy class yesterday, and I'm not exactly thrilled with the trainer. She has a lot of experience with big dogs and also breeds dobermans. She gave a long lecture on the importance of not letting your pets sleep with you or on furniture. She then asked the class how many let their dog sleep with them, and of course I raised my hand. She was about to say something to me about that, but I just told her that Bitsy sleeping with me is NOT going to change so she might as well save her breath. She then asked how many dogs do their business inside, and again, here I am, the BAD one. Bitsy goes on washable pee pads and outside. Half the the time she pees inside, the other half is outside. She hasn't had an accident in a month (and she's only 17 weeks) so she's doing fine. I cannot have her just do her business outside because I live in an apartment building and there's no way I'm walking outside by myself at 11 pm at night. Then the trainer told a story of owners who carry their "pocket pooches" around and how aggressive these dogs are and how the they have a tendancy to bite, blah blah blah and she looked right at me while she was telling this story. The trainer has some sort of bias towards small dogs, and I know she's not too thrilled with me, and neither am I with her. I'm not one to give up and I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I will try at least 1 more class before I take my business elsewhere. |
It absolutely does depend on the trainer, but that would be true whatever the facility. Sounds like that trainer is strictly a "big dog" person, or someone who has limited experience with small dogs or perhaps a bad experience. It does seem a bit unprofessional that she would make you feel that uncomfortable in the first class. Is she the only trainer there? If not, perhaps you could switch to another trainer. Archie and Willie have been through several classes ---- puppy, beginner and intermediate obedience and are now taking the click-a-trick class at our local Petsmart, all with the same trainer. She is great and my two absolutely love her. Sure hope it all works out. |
