Out of the kitchen training Which is the best way to keep a dog out of the kitchen? He goes out when I say out, but then immediately comes back in:confused: |
So glad to see another who trains dogs to stay out of the kitchen! We grew up this way but seem to be in the minority. I found persistence is key. Using the stay command helps, also. Sometimes they just have it in their head to follow you in, though. My girls did better at our condo when they could see me in the kitchen. Now they don't like it as much because I'm usually blocked from their view so they tend to peek in. |
Chip was easy to train, he picked it up right away and will not go in the kitchen if someone is sitting at the table eating. Zippy on the other hand, since my sister is not consistent with his training and lives in apartment with an open dining area, he keeps wandering in the kitchen. Zippy knows the term "out", and when he is visiting here I really enforce it. It involves alot of getting up and chasing him out, saying "out" until he finally gets it and lays down in the living room or goes to his "box". |

I wont have it any other way. My kitchen is just a kitchen separate from the dining room so he comes in and makes himself comfortable LOL, out of hte kitchen he goes, I make him sit and WAIT soon as I turn he comes back in LOL. So I know I have removed the kiddies door that was there, so now he must learn out regardless of door or no door.. He is never allowed to lag around at dinner time near my table or bfast time. i dont allow dogs to do this ever. Anything he gets to eat is either given in a special area for goodies and other than that in his bowl. But this out of the kitchen and stay out is a bit hard as the smellier the food is, the more he wants in:D . he cant even hear me scraping a carrot, BOLTS in:eek: |

What about when you are cooking? My kitchen is only kitchen no eating area |
Chip actually did that last night, when I was at the stove. Sat right down next to me on the mat, I know he wanted to be close to me but its not safe. So I scooted him off the mat and out the kitchen. I watched him to make sure he is out, occassionaly he will straddle the doorway to test me. Sometimes when I kick him out he'll find a toy in the living room to occupy himself with and leave me alone. I think its just being repeatative and consistent, for them to fully grasp it. |

It's funny to see them when we get home. I'll be in the kitchen putting away groceries or something and hubby will let them out of their kennels. They come racing to see me... and pull up quickly where the carpet ends so they won't go in the kitchen. Then they wiggle until I come over to see them. |
I am so glad to see that I am not the only one that won't let Deiter in kitchen. He does very good. |
