Sebastian and Penny are 100 percent potty trained, but Piper has his moments.

Gizzie is over a year old and is about 90% trained if i keep taking her out she will potty, but if i get into a tv show or something she will just go and not think twice about it, she doesnt let me know she has to go so i have to take her out every few hours or so

Thanks everyone for your replies. Sounds like it's possible my puppy can be totally potty trained one day.

I'm a little confused about bedtime though. I hear over and over that the crate only needs to be big enough for them to stand up and turn around in. No bigger. I understand the reasoning behind this (they won't potty in their bed) but 8 hours is to long for them to hold it at this point, isn't it? (8 weeks old) Aren't they likely to go at night regardless of how small the crate is because they just can't hold it anymore? I give him his last offering of food and water about 2 hours before bed but he still pees at night.

Also I'm a little confused as to where the potty pad fits in to it all. Is the potty pad an alternative to taking the puppy outside? If they go on the pad are they thinking that means they can go anywhere in the house or do they learn the pad is the only place inside they can go? Should I be using the potty pad for more than just night time?

I love using potty pads. Lilly's used them since we got her which was around 6 weeks or something. They just use them instead of going outside. The more "expensive" ones have a stronger scent on them that draw the puppy to them. It's kinda odd having a pee pad laying around but it's a lot better than having them pee all over the carpet.

If you let them potty on the pad they are more likely to think it is OK to go anywhere in the house, and they are way less likely to be trained at anyone else's house.

We woke up and took Loki outside in the middle of the night. It was only for a few months. Now if they need to go out at night they ask, and it's not very often.

I use pee pads as well. Annabelle will go outside during walks, but uses the pads almost exclusively. I bought one of the dog litter pans for petsmart and put her piddle pads in that. That made a huge difference for her. Before that, she would have her feet on the pad but miss and hit the floor. It is a bit odd to have a pee pad in the house, but I agree it is better then a wet smelly carpet. I work during the day, and they have been great for me. Annabelle can go when she needs to and I don't have to worry about my carpet during the day. She also knows the "go potty" and will go on command. Sometimes she just squats and fakes it, but at least she tries! :) My mom also has a yorkie trained to use pee pads, and my grandmother has her poodle trained. Holidays are a bit interesting because none of the babies want to go on a wet pad! Pee pads have been great for us, but they aren't for everyone. I order mine 500 at a time from petedge. I've found them to be very thick and reasonably priced. Good luck and congrats on the new baby!

Since your puppy is 8 weeks old, he probably can't hold it all night. Also, having him in a big crate where he uses one area to sleep and pees on the other area during the night would not help. The best way to do it would be to get a smaller crate, and you'll have to wake up in the middle of the night to let him pee, once or twice a night. You wouldn't need to do this forever though, my Brownie is 3.5 month old and he can hold it until 6am =)

Once he behaves well and does not pee inside the crate anymore, you can probably just leave him in his open crate, and put the whole setup inside a playpen/x-pen. He'll go out and pee inside the pen area, but outside his crate.

And in case you are wondering, I don't really think there's any way around waking up in the middle to let him go potty. He's young, so you'll have to be responsible for his night-time potties =) Just like how you would make little kids and babies go for a wee during night :D

Winston was a dream to train, instead of the nightmare I was expecting. He was 100% trained from day one, he is now 3 years old...never, nada, none...not a single accident. Seriously!!! It can be done, and the sooner the better...Yorkies really are smart little creatures and oh so eager to please. He goes potty outside and outside only, I swear he'd explode before he went potty in the house. Good luck with yours!!!

I just wanted to add one thing...

Do make sure you get Max neutered as soon as your vet says it's safe to. These toy breed males seem to have a tendency to want to mark their territory indoors. It's best to get him neutered before he starts any objectionable behavior related to sexual maturity as neutering often doesn't stop it once they've started.

If your husband is hyper about housebreaking, he certainly won't want little Max lifting his leg on the furniture! :)

Did most everyone here wake a few times at night to take their puppy out? My 8 month old baby just started going clear through the night sleeping, I've really been enjoying it. How many times should I be taking him out? Am I just supposed to do it at the same times each night?

Tank is 100% potty trained. He was 6 months when he got it but he does great! It did help that Im always home and have an older potty trained dog too. Congrats on your new baby!!!

I agree, you monitor them and take them out when they are young every 20 to 30minutes. My other dog is nearly 6 months and he is 95% trained, he scratched me or the door to go out. Now IF I ignore that que and he does a doodoo on the floor, it is MY fault. I intend to do the same with my Yorkie when I get him this weekend. I think all dogs are hard to train if there is no consistency and the people are at work. I am home 24/7 with this other puppy and he has not had an accident deliberately in about 5 weeks:D

Sarge has been a dream in potty-training. Of course there have been accidents but they're usually my fault. He can go about 6-8 hours (overnight) without going, but during the day I take him out every hour or so. I plan to increase the time between potty-breaks slowly so he has a chance to learn to hold it and to signal in some way that he needs to go out. I wish I had gotten the medium sized crate, that sounds like a great idea for overnight. I ended up cutting a crate-sized hole in a large cardboard box and opened the door into the box so he could go on the paper if he needed too. That didn't last long since he gained weight and could knock the box over. My little fat boy :p . The yorkie was a great choice in a puppy, Be consistent, and everything should follow.

I read someplace that as a dog gets older he hold one hour per month, so from three months he is still weeing a bit more, from four he is holding longer, then 5 even longer like every 5 hours 6 months 6 hours and so no. my puppy is nearly six and he holds from about 10pm to 7am with no problems. Then we go out and he is bursting the dam:D
