Llamaface, You should do what works for you. Here you only get advise and then you pick what is best for your pup and yourself. I dont like crating my pup, but others swear by it and works for them. I use a baby gate to keep Gucci in a room when alone, the rest of the time she has run of the house. That is what works for us. |
i say train your dog the way that best fits you and your lifestyle and your baby seeing as no dog is the same. i didn't use a gate or a crate or anything at all to train my coco, he actually had full range of my home since day 1 and he always goes outside. my hubby trained him to ring the bell when he needs to go. i found that this worked best for me and coco. but like i said just train your baby with what's best for you and her and your lifestyle. |

Thanks, And i LOVE that name!!!! GUCCI!!!! I named mine Louis after Louis Vitton. Haha. what a cowinkydink. |
I totally agree with the others...you have to do with want works for you...we didn't crate trained either of our girls...with Magic we kept her in the kitchen until she was pretty much trained and now she has free roam of the living room and kitchen but we have a gate up to stop her from going to the bedrooms and she quickly learned to go outside...Sailor immediately had free roam, living room/kitchen, and learned to use pee pads and not outside...we personally did not like the idea of a crate, but I know that it has worked for others...every puppy is unique and will learn on their own time, you have to go with what works for you and your Louis... |
Have you consulted your breeder for additional advice? If I placed a puppy, I would insist that the new parent contact me for advice. I am not saying it is bad to ask others such as we Yorkie lovers on this forum, but your breeder could be more specific. I train to the X pen but I have several babies in different stages of training. I can take those crates everywhere I go to visit, make them any size I want up to 16 feet in diameter. |

This is a very diverse and opinionated web forum. Sometimes to a fault. Do what you feel is comfortable for your pet. I personally have a large crate with plenty of room, food & wter, toys and blanket. I tired the gates and my dogs either knocked them down or chewed on them or somehting. You have to find what works for you and your yorkie and and not worry too much about what some might say. |

I suggested crating in your bedroom at night and gate him if you can't watch his every move until he is potty trained. I'm sorry, but I don't see where that was confusing. |
We use a mixture of crate and gates - we use crates in the car and gates in the house. Just pick and choose out of the advise you are given and do what feels right, and is convenient and works for you. |
I also crate my puppy at night. Actually, she sleeps right beside my 17 yr. old daughters bed...and has done well knowing someone is right there for her. ;) We go to bed late around here..and get up early. It works great. Its large enough for her to move around...I have a nylabone in there and soft toy and blanket on one of those short tiny fleece oval beds her breeder gave us. :) During the day we watch her like a hawk...lol We have some baby gates when I can't be right there as she goes discovering~ lol :p and even with that..I have a super play yard XL that the breeder used to keep the pups out of trouble..I use that too when I need to. She is used to that since she had one at the breeders when she didn't want them underfoot..in they would go..and out they could come. Much safer when you can't watch... Hope this helps. :) |
What exactly are you looking for here - I saw this..http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9769 and kind of wonder....Are you really looking for information because LOTS of people will help you if you let them. |

I dont see why you would crate a dog all day? These methods are only used when you cant be home or to sleep at night. If you are home they shoudl be able to run around. |
