need help with weird behavior problem
 
Rebel and Lucy play well together, but when I start to take them outside Rebel runs to the door and starts barking like crazy. He bites Lucy's ears and literally chases her out the door.

He barks in a circle around her, bites her ear one last time then takes off to do his business and leaves her alone.

Lucy has gotten to the point where she doesn't want to go outside because of Reb's behavior.

I've tried the squirt bottle when he starts barking, but it doesn faze him at all.

What can I do to stop this? (Lucy weighs 11 lbs and Rebel only weighs 5 lbs)

How old are each of them? Is Rebel a pup and Lucy older?

Pixie does this I started making her sit and wait till I say it is ok. If I do this she goes out nice an don't get that agressiveness.

Lucy will be 2 in January and Rebel just turned 1 last month. Lucy is very laid back and they play together really well until it's time to go outside.

This is the only time they don't get along.

Today when he started I said "NO" in a very firm voice and turned my back to him. He immediately stopped until I put my hand back on the doorknob. We repeated it 3 times and he stopped until we got to the screen door on the back porch and he started up again.

I thought about picking him up and letting Lucy go outside first before I put him down. Do you think that would work?

Does it seem like Rebel just gets overstimulated when it's time to go outside? If that's the case, Coby (7 mos old) did the same thing to Reggie (10 yrs old). So I tried to 1) downplay going outside to Coby - I stopped making it the "Disneyworld" experience that I had been. I made it more like going to the living room. ;) And 2) When I first starting trying to break the habit, I'd let Coby have just a few minutes (3-5) outside alone before bringing Reggie out. It seemed to get rid of a little of that energy.

I'm pulling for you!!

Rebel does seem to get overstimulated when we go out. I've tried letting Rebel go out a couple minutes ahead of Lucy, but he waits at the bottom of the back steps, barking like a maniac, until she comes down. If I try to pick him up, he runs. That's why I think maybe I should pick him up before we go outside so Lucy can go first before I put him down.

I know Lucy could really "get" him if she wanted to, but she just lets him get away with it. I almost wish she would roll him over a couple of times so he'd maybe get the message.

having him sit even her is good then let her go out and hold him in a sit till he is calm. do this every time and I bet it will get better really fast.;) picking him wont work as well.

pixie is 7 mo and the others are almost 6yrs it worked almost right away.

I would definetly try letting them out seperately..its not fair that Rebel gets away with this sort of aggresion even if it dosent hurt her...OR another idea is to put him on a leash and go out together..that way he cannot get to her and if he does you can stop it immediately and reward him for good behaviour...if he starts nipping at her roll him on his back and hold him there until he relaxes and then let him up again...definetly try the leash idea that way he cant run away from you if you need to discipline him..

I like the leash idea! Thank you so much. I'm going to put the leash right by the backdoor so I can do it first thing in the morning.

You're right - it's not fair to Lucy for Rebel to get away with this. He had surgery for LP a couple of months ago and got really spoiled during the recovery period and it's GOT to stop.

I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

when you put the leash on him do you have him sit? If not try this. it really helps with (being the pack leader)

Great suggestion!! Make sure he sits before he goes out and before he comes in..and make sure HE is the LAST one to come in...he has to stay seated before he is allowed in and while everyone else is coming in..

The leash worked good this morning! I put the leash on Rebel inside the house and made him wait to go outside. He was a perfect gentleman and NO barking.

After a few minutes, I let him off the leash and he didn't even offer to bother Lucy.

This is going to be the routine until he understands that he can't harrass Lucy!
