Need some advice please!
 
My dear friend has three dogs, a female Chihuahua and 2 male Yorkies. The Chihuahua (18 mos) and the oldest male (10 mos) have recently started attacking the little male (3 mos) out of the blue. Nothing seems to trigger it but they are actually hurting the baby (they ripped his ear last night). Have any of you experienced this? is there any advice you can give her? She's tried time-outs but that doesn't seem to help. I've gotten such great advice from you all that I told her I'd reach out to you. Please help!!

I think she might want to contact a behavior therapist.

Wow! That is really terrible. I'm sure your friend is distressed by this. I know I would be. I sure hope you get some great advice on here. I only have 1, so I'm not much help. :(

Does the little one bark or do anything to cause this? I have four female Yorkies and for awhile the 4.2 LB 4 year old(Mandy) would attack the 12 LB 2 year old (Krissy). Krissy would roll on her back and Mandy would go away. Then the two year old finally fought back and that wasn't good for Mandy and she had a gash above her eye. I did not separate them at all. I actually put just the two of them together all day for over two weeks ( where I was close by). That meant keeping my other dogs in a different area. I noticed as long as they were calm it was OK but any type of excitement would trigger a fight. At one point I thru my full glass of water at them. BOY were they shocked!:confused:

After many squirts with water and a loud NO they now do not attack each other if the phone rings, door bell rings, I say 'lets go' etc....

I though I would have to get rid of one but the water bottle sits on the floor in what ever room we are in as a reminder that fighting is not acceptable. I do not leave them alone together if I'm going out though. Hopefully the water bottle can go soon too.

Have your friend try the water bottle and see if it helps.

I attribute puppy problems like these to the puppy not showing submission when they pick on him. Since yorkies have that self-importance we all love, they have a hard time backing down to aggression. I would just keep an eye on it but not seperate him from the other two. Eventually he will learn his place in the pack and everyone will be happy. If the puppy rolls on his back and shows his belly to them, its THE BEST thing he could do, thats a sign of submission to dogs to expose their vunerable underbelly. If you see him do this, then rest assured he understands that he's the newbie in the pack. Hope this helps.
