Food and water at night??? I crate Lois at night, should I give her food and water at night as well? I would really like her to quit using her bed for a potty pad....she is 12wks old... |
I would give water, but not food. A 12 week old should not be expected to hold it overnight, if you don't want her to potty in her crate then you will have to get up a couple of times a night to take her out. |
In my opinion, 12 weeks is too young to be without food and water all night. She's still a baby and needs more time to learn not go to potty in her crate. How long is she crated at night? It might be too long for her to hold it in ... you may have to take her out once or twice a night for a bathroom break. |
When Mr. Biggs was a puppy, I always left him food and water at night. But now that he's older and sleeps in the bedroom with us, he doesn't get it unless he wines at the bedroom door to let us know he wants to go get water. lol. I don't think they need the water at night though, so you could probably do without. As far as the pottying in the bed, I'd go to petsmart and buy the spray that deters them from peeing on things. |
I know someone suggested to me, to keep Venus's crate by the bed at night. That helped me get her out for the midnight and early morning potty trips. She then would wake me 2 times in the middle of the night for potty when she was that young. I would also cut food out after 7pm, that helped with her pottying in the crate overnight. I know 12 weeks is really young, and sometimes they will potty in the crate, and THEN wake us up to clean it up, cause they unhappy about it being with them! When Venus learned that I would take her in the middle of the night, the pottying in the crate stopped. So whether it was before or after she made a mess, I always took her out anyway. Thats when she learned to wake me before she pottied. |
12 weeks is young however Buddy was 14 1/2 wks when I brought him home. I crate trained him and I never put food or water in there at night. How could he learn to hold his bladder if water was in there with him? It would be setting him up for failure. He had two accidents at the beginning that's it. He was completely create trained after a week. Perhaps because he was a larger Yorkie I don't know. I did get up at night with him a couple times and took him out. My vet said to stop because I am making a bad habit for him. Do I want him on my schedule or do I want to be on his. My vet was right. He slept through the night with no accidents after the first week. 15 1/2 weeks old and no accidents. After that I let him be free in the kitchen for alittle while then in my bedroom in his bed. I know it sounds cruel but it's not. It's the only way they can learn to hold their bladder. You can't crate train a pup and put water in there with them. Your giving them a cross message. Water and food should be given outside of the crate only. |
My puppy is now 12 weeks old and I got her when she was 9 weeks old. From day one, she slept in a soft crate beside my pillow. When she cries in the middle of the night, I get up and take her to her pee pad in the bathroom. I take up her water at 8 or 9 pm. She has never pottied in her crate and sleeps through the night half the time. We go to bed at 10:30 pm and wake up at 6:30 am. |
We're going through similar problems with our 11 week old. |
