Dog Litter and Litter box training
 

Hi guys,

I haven't been on in awhile, I've been moving. Living in California, it's sooo expensive. We had to move from a house into a condo.

We we're thinking about doing the dog litter box thing w/ our 2 yorkies. It's kind of a pain having to walk them outside all the time downstairs and to a grassy area (I miss the yard we had).

What are your insights on litter box training? Does it smell? Is there a certain dog litter brand you recommend us using? Also, the litter box. We have a litter maid (the electric one). Do you suggest us use something else?

I haven't tried the litter box, we use the pads but I know there are people here that have had great success with the litterbox.

I tried and tried but Teddy would not go in the litter box. He's one of those puppies that has to "walk it out" when he goes poop, but he wouldn't even use it to pee. Good Luck!!

Hopedfully someone who has had good luck with the litter will post. Tink just wanted to eat it and wouldn't poo or pea in it. I ended up recycling the litter and using the pan for cleaning supply storage.:rolleyes:

That din't work for my Phoebe, but I heard that other people work well, mine use the pee-pad at home and they go out too:aimeeyork :aimeeyork

I have 6 months old yorkie puppy! We tried wee wee pads! It didn't work.

So we tried Purina Secon Nature dog litter pan and dog litter. It works great.

Months ago I posted about getting Sargie to use a litter box. I had a small box at the time and he was trained to use the pads pretty well, at least for urine. (He'd sometimes leave stools on throw rugs instead). Well, he had other behavioral issues too, so at the end of August I got Bark Busters in. When I tried to take his Alpha status away from him, this four-pound, 8-month bundle of sweet became - uh, insane. He started to challenge me at every step. We have gradually gone from vocals to training aids to the spray-bottle-in-the-face and time outs in the kennel. We are trying to get him to simply acknowledge my "superiority" so that I can do things without him constantly nipping and barking for attention and have actually had to devolve training to simply stopping the barking and mouthing and leave the "heel", "stay", "get away from the Swiffer", "stop taking every freaking thing in the house and running with it", "stop ruining new pairs of shoes", and potty training for later. Meanwhile I was advised to get a bigger litter box, and I still have two pads which I keep sprayed with Simple Solution or whatever it's called, next to the box, which is also sprayed. Now, he goes wherever he wants...it's actually gotten worse. I think much of it is out of spite because I am trying to take away his alpha status and because I have gone back to work (I'm a teacher) and disrupted his summer schedule. Wow! Strikes me as something a cat would do! But the trainers tell me we'll get it yet, he's just challenging everything. At least I feel I have someone in my corner...so everyone on this site - that's the good thing, to know others are in your corner. Believe me, if Sargie learns to behave there's hope for every one of us. I'll try to keep Yorkietalk informed!:animal-pa

I know what you mean about taking back your Alpha space, because Penny is driving me nuts. She's in time out more then she's out.

Dogs didn't like the litter! Then used pads, that was fine. Now using turf which is so much cheaper and less problems than pads.
