How do I teach "sit"? I feel sort of stupid for asking this! But I am a first time dog owner, and have no idea how to go about teaching my 16 week old pup, Violet, to sit? I tried searching this forum and did not see anything easily, so I apologize if this is a question that comes up a lot. I just didn't see it? Thanks guys!! |
Take a treat, put it in front of his nose, and start to raise it above his head. His head will follow it & the little butt will hit the floor! Don't raise it too high, just back. |

It's one of those funny things that it seems like everyone should know, but if it's the first time...... "Sit" is really very easy. Just do what Sadie's Mom said. Hold the treat RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR NOSE so they can smell it but not get it. As you move the treat back and only slightly up, to follow the treat, they have no choice but to get in the sit position. Say "Sit" and then "Good Violet" and give loads of praise. Then do it again. You'll be amazed at how quickly they get that. Before the night's over, when she sees a treat, her butt will hit the floor. Good Luck!! |
Yay!!! Thanks so much you guys! I can't WAIT to try this tonight! Thanks so much for your awesome advice!! |
As always you've gotten really good advice. |
Sit !! :animal36 Bogey learned "sit" first. Like what is said above, take a treat & put it in front of his nose & move above it, he will sit to get it. I would insist he sit before any treat & he learned within a day. Now (a year later) all I do is raise the treat up & he sits without me saying anything!! They're quick learners. |
