Growling Yorkie We adopted our Yorkie from a breeder, he was 1-1/2 old. He gets along very well with my 12 yo son and hangs out alot in his room. He growls though when you approach his room and sometimes barks. He still growls when you enter the room and seems very nervous. I have tried to tell him no but it doesnt seem to work. Any suggestions. He has growled when he is in the down stairs area to. I'm not sure what this behavior is about but dont want to get bitten. He will be fine laying on the couch and getting petted but then will growl at you in the next room. Is he trying to get attention or what. |
No, he's not trying to get attention. This is a behavioral issue and sounds like it could be fear aggression. Do a search on google and you should find some information to help you out. |
I agree that this is not attention-seeking behavior. You really need to consult a trainer or behaviorist about this - I really think that this behavior could easily escalate into biting. You don't want that to happen. A professional would be better equipped to deal with this than anyone can over the internet. Good luck! |

I finally found Dog Whisper down here in Florida, and he does have a lot of good tips. Penny barks at everyone, and everything, so I'm working on it by taking her out more. The first time I took her to PetSupermarket I thought she was going to have a nervous breakdown, but she's a lot better now that I take her once a week. |
What your Yorkie is doing is gurading. It could be a toy, food, a piece of furniture and in your case an area. He is unsure of his position in your pack. You need to become the Alpha and show him he can count on you to be his leader. Sounds silly, I know but it is true. I went through this with Buddy. When you enter the room talk gently to him and then throw down a treat, his favorite and continue going about your business. Do this whenever you feel he is gurading something. He needs to trust you. Ceaser Millan has wonderful idea for this type of behavior. His dvd's can be order on line and are worth the money. Good luck. |
There are many different types of aggression in dogs. You deal with each kind differently. Its very important to know what kind of aggression your dogs has before you do anything. For example, if your dog has fear aggression but you deal with the issue as if he had dominance aggression, you would only make it worse. aggression thank you, for the link http://www.unclematty.com/training/aggressiontypes I looked it up and it seem my yorki has all of the types of aggression. i have tried mostly everything but my problem is, i think, that all family not consistent. my baby trained ME/US very well:rolleyes: he is my first dog and I have spoiled him . now paying for that. I do get very upset with him for snapping at me by ignoring. he knows that he did something wrong cause he always hides under the bed after snapping. I love him dearly!he helped me so much when my mom passed away 3yrs ago that i always forgive him for his misbehavior. |
