2 dogs, 1 crate? Hi y'all! We just got 2 male (neutered) Yorkies, about a year old. Should we have one crate for each dog, or are they OK in a crate together? thanks kevin |
Are they used to living together? I'd be leary of putting two unknown dogs in a crate together...maybe an x-pen if they were brothers...but even then what if they got into a fight when you weren't home to break it up? They'd have no where to go to get away from each other. I think a kennel is their safe space and they shouldn't have to share it...just IMO Heather |
BTW, we were told they're brothers, or half-brothers. They get along very well, with the usual roughhousing, stealing each others' toys, etc. We're inclined to go with one crate, but nothing we've read mentions this question, so I'm asking... thanks! |
Oh, we were typing at the same time! So, yes, that's kind of what I was thinking on the other hand. They might hate being separated, but what if there were a problem? The smaller one at first seemed fairly submissive to his brother, but now he seems to be more assertive. He's not necessarily trying to be dominant, but he's not taking any crap either! We've only had them since Friday. They've been in a few foster situations in the few weeks since they were rescued from a neglectful owner. We're hoping to be allowed to keep them... |
we had two younger dogs in my obedience class that were in the same crate and always together, the lady and her son had issues trying to train them because they were always together. Our trainer recommended splitting them up. Not sure if that helps or not. :) |
Aren't there big crates that can be devided as two with two doors? I thought I have seen those. Dog.com may have some. I would do that if it were available. Leaving them together in a confined place makes me nervous, but so does completely seperating them. Good luck, and :welcome4: to YorkieTalk |
Ive had 2 sisters that I kept in a crate together. They love to have company in my opinion. If they do show signs of aggressiveness I would split them up though. |
As much as I love my sister, I wouldn't want to be shut in a cage with her for hours. I wouldn't, perhaps you could just puppy proof a room for them. If they are in a room then if they have a disagreement then they can get away from eachother, shut in a crate together things could get heated and I wouldn't risk it. |
My two, (who are Aunt & Nephew), have 2 small crates in one X-Pen. Most of the time, they only use one crate, but occasionally, they will split up into the two if they don't want to share something! I guess everyone needs a little privacy sometimes!! |
Thanks, y'all! Info continues to trickle in about these dogs. They'll be 2 years old in Dec and Jan. They're half-brothers and the younger one has never been without his bro. What's an X-pen? Is that where the X-Men keep their dogs? :p Yeah, I'm sure you've never heard that one before... edit: I looked it up! |
