HELP - Another Potty Training Question I also posted this in the General Discussion Forums but thought I would ask here as well. I need some serious help with Kiki and her potty training. We picked Kiki up from a breeder at 16 weeks and she was already pee pad trained. (She is now almost 9 months). Because I am a stay-at-home mom, we opted to use the X-pen set up for her rather than a crate. Her X-pen is in our family room with her bed inside, pee pad, food/water and toys. This is where she stays when we can't keep an eye on her or I have to run errands and she can't come with me. So the problem is she will only pee and poop in her X-pen on her pad. She goes for a walk every night and in the four months we have had her, she has only peed twice outside. When she did, I immediately praised her and gave her treats. I don't mind that she only goes inside on her pad, but the BIG problem is when we take her out with us to someone else's house, I always take a pee pad with us and set it down where she can see it. She will never go at someone else's house and will hold it until we get home and she is back in her pen. This is all wonderful as I know she will never have an accident but yesterday I had to go out all day so I decided to bring Kiki to my mom's house for dogsitting and I brought the X-pen, bed, toys, etc and set it up exactly like at home. She went in and out of her pen all day long at my mom's house but didn't pee or poop once in the 8 hours she was there. The minute we brought her home and set up her pen she peed and pooped. I don't know what to do ... I am scared she is going to get sick from holding it so much. I even bring pads with pee on them so she knows she should go but she just holds it. Sorry this post is so long, but I am scared what would happen if we had to go away overnight or went away on vacation. Thanks everyone .. I hoping for some good answers Anna http://www.dogster.com/dogs/511397 |
Oh to have that problem. lol!!! Ours is 10wks. old. She will go on the wee wee pads but she also goes on the carpet and runs. I take her to the garage where I have papers and wee wee pads down because the vet does not want her to go outside yet. I don't know if we will ever see any good signs of her potty training. My schnauzers were so easy and this little bugger is something else. Sounds like to me your little one does really good. Its amazing she holds it that long. :animal-pa |
Kiki is a very private doggy, isn't she?? I know that Coby doesn't like to poop in front of anyone. (He loves to pee in front of anyone who will watch!) Can you try giving her a quiet room at someone else's house where she has more privacy? I knew someone once whose dog would only potty in the bathroom with the door closed! |
I wonder what the record is for the longest pee and poop holding. haha Your little one is still young - 10 weeks is still a baby, you will have plenty of time to potty train. Good luck with it. I think the problem is every time Kiki went pee and poop on her pad, we gave her a treat and praised her. She is probably thinking her X-pen is the only place she is supposed to go. |

I really don't know what to do with her. I was thinking to have a practice sleepover at my mom's to see if Kiki would finally go. I guess eventually, she would have to. |

I am sure I would be calling my mom every hour ... "did she poop or pee"?? I feel like I am starting all over again with a newborn child. |

Awe, I'm not really sure what to say :) It seems you are doing everything right! I'm guessing that if she really had to go, she would.. so hopefully she will just become more comfortable pottying in new places and she won't have to hold it so much :) |
I guess your right.. I probably shouldn't complain since for the most part she is trained. I'll have to keep trying though. Anna |
