SUPER possessive Ok, I have a problem. My sweet angel has a mean streak. I had NO idea until this weekend when we were keeping a fellow yt members 2 adult dogs. Maggie was just not nice, at all!!! every time they would come near me, near the water bowl, near any of her toys, near anything that she thought was "hers", she would run up and snap at them. It got to the point that they were scared of her!!! it was so sad. Maggie has 2 fur-siblings so it's no t like she is used to being the only one in the house! and we have kept these dogs before and maggie had a BLAST playing with them the whole time. but this time, she was just mean. I was so embarrassed, their mom came to get them and wanted to give maggie a treat. as soon as she grabbed for the bag of goodies that she had with her, one of her dogs went near it and maggie came running up and snapped at her dog!! so i told her maggie could not have the treat and i put maggie in my bedroom. I have scolded her, put her on her back, etc. but she just continues to do it. any advice????? I do plan on having other dogs in the future so she needs to get over this!! she is 11 months old (well, she will be on the 5th of Sept) thanks in advance! |
Sounds like she wants to be the dominate one. Is she in heat or are the others in heat? |
I think she was just trying to be the boss of the house. |

oh god !! that sounds like Caden sometimes !! we have another non-yorkie dog and they are ALWAYS playing ... but sometimes if i give him something special (a corn cob, a bone) , he gets all possessive when my other dog comes in like a 6 foot radius of the object !! he like scares him away then goes and gaurds it. I wouldn't even be able to touch it !! i have no idea how to solve this problem, doesnt get too extreme . good luck !! =] |
I so hear your pain with this one. Paddington is the SAME way. In the dog park all he does is find balls and guard them. If another dog, no matter what size, comes near him he leaps at them and snaps his teeth. We really didn't get many answers about how to stop him but we started him on remote collar training classes in hopes to get him to listen to us off leash so even if he wants to be a mean brat I can tell him not to. We are also thinking of getting him a little maltese sister eventually so he can get used to being around other dogs. Though since you say you have other dogs maybe that won't even matter lol. We socialized Paddy from the day he was fully vaccinated so I too have no idea how he got like this. I think its just hard wired in them to compete for status and the more dominant temperment they have the more snappy they are. The only thing I can think to do is train him to listen to my rules at ALL times. Hope that helps! |
Cooper does this too, but only at his house. He never ever does it to Carley, but our neighbors dogs come over all the time (they let them run loose:confused: ) and Cooper will run up and snap at them if he thinks they are getting too close to me and my husband or if we try to give all of the dogs a treat. I think it is just his way of saying "MINE". I have bought a squirt bottle just for this and when he runs and snaps he gets a squirt. It does stop him for awhile, but then a few days later he will do it again. He only does this to these dogs when they get close to us to be petted, or when we try to give them a treat, otherwise he is fine with them. These are large dogs too and he just doesn't care, he lets them know he is boss. The squirt bottle does help though. Good luck! |
Teddy will get like that around other dogs, if he sees me petting them or paying them any attention. He also gets that way when people come up too close to the car. I guess sometimes dogs are just possessive of what's theirs. |
