Desperatley in Need of help
 

I have a Yorkie puppy, I have tried everything and cannot get her to go outside to the bathroom. I can spend an hour out there with her and as soon as she comes in the door she will go to the bathroom everytime, I have used the newspaper to whip her with (no luck) she knows she is doing wrong now because she runs or tries to hide from you when she goes in the house. I am a new member here and don't know alot about getting around this site yet but if anyone has any advise for me PLEASE HELP Thanks, ritak

I have the same problem with my little girl. She knows she can go outside because she goes at my parents and when I walk her.

If your little one goes while on walks then try taking treats with you and rewarding them when they do go.

If you're not already doing so you could try telling them "potty" or "hurry up" when they are going to the toilet so that they come to learn the word as a command and then rewarding them afterwards. This way you can tell them what you want them to do when you let them outside. This kind of works with my girl.

I would recommend positive reinforcement with the above method rather than punishment.

First of all, stop whipping her. That only teaches her that going potty anywhere is bad. That's why she's not going when you're watching her outside. She's afraid she's going to get whipped. It will also teach her to hide from you when she has to go.

The secret is praise. Praise her when she gets it right, ignore her when she gets it wrong. If she goes in the house, give her a quick "no" and then carry her outside to where you want her to go. Don't be angry. Just show her the right way to go.

If she's not going outside, take her on a long walk a half hour after feeding her. As soon as she goes, praise, praise and treat, treat, treat. Let her know that she did it right.

Don't feel bad about starting out the wrong way. A lot of us were taught as kids to rub their nose in it and give them a spanking. That couldn't be more wrong. It humiliates them and causes them to want to hide.

Do you use a crate? The best advice I ever got on her was to take her outside for a few minutes. If she didn't go, back in the crate for about 30 mins. Repeat this over until she goes potty outside. Then REWARD, REWARD, REWARD. Thank goodness I don't have neighbors or they would've had a show the first time Molly went outside. I use Cheerios for rewards.

I did this over a long weekend for 3 days in a row. After she would potty, then we would have playtime for a while. The next time I took her outside, we would repeat the process. I really think this was the turning point for Molly on her training.

It just takes time, and you have to do it OVER AND OVER again. Have you tried treats, for little ones I like to give cheese. And now they even have the kraft crumbles, they are great!! :thumbup: AUbrey didn't liek going outside, and I had to take him out a lot. Then he finally got the point.

Hi and welcome to yt:) i have a 5 thm old and she is still having accidents, I take her out every hour on the hour, she can usaully hold it for that long, I give her alot of praise each time she goes, I also crate her at night and she can now hold it all night long, this took about a week, she now goes to the door but if im not there to let her out, thats when the accidents occure, good luck to you, please post pics, would love to see her:)

I had this problem with Moe, followed by Pippy, first thing I did to stay sane durring the potty training time is get Moe a belly band and Pippy some girly panties.....this way any accidents werent such a tragedy , simply change the pad and try again. Then the next thing I had to do was make going potty outside fun.....like you do when you get a child to use the potty chair.....When I noticed one of them sniffing about or going in circles ect..each dogs got different signs that they are about to go.....that was my cue to say something like " Lets go potty outside!", in an overly excited happy mommy voice.....id go straight to the door doggy in arms to prevent accidents on the way, and out they went in the area set aside for doggy business.If we had a sucessfull outing....id point out what it was they had done(poo or pee) and get very happy about it all, this of course made them glad they had obliged.....I would say to them (deppending which it was) " good boy/girl you went potty/poopoo outside, what a good doggy...."as I pointed out what it was they did, yes this may sound a bit over the top...but a dog learns what it is in his or her life that gets attention, and they LOVE possitive attention, they also LOVE pleasing thier owners when they can.Its very important though whatever words you choose to use..they stay the same each time, as a dog also learns from routine.If we had an accident of poo in the house, I would in a sad voice , not angry....say" Poopoo goes outside ", as I picked it up to take it outside to the area they should of used.I have noticed with both my Yorkies, they aren't very verbal about letting me know it's time to go.....Moe silently goes downstairs and waits for me ..wether I know he is waiting or not.....so I try to be keen on noticing if he is missing, Pippy tends to stare at me intently..which I can easily mistake for her wanting a treat or something else.....so I have trained myself to let them out about every hour to every two deppending wether or not they have eaten recently, or had a big slurp of water.This has worked for my doggies....and Pippy was an older untrained pup when I got her....so hopefully it will be helpful to you.

It just takes time and work everyday..

They are all different and can be stubborn

Don't give up..she will get them hang of going outside for you

Praise her alot..

I used the going outside and if she doesn't..crate her for a little bit and Try Again..:)

AlaskaYorkie is right. When she is clear about what you DO want, you will most likely see her doing it more. So, when she does get it right, throw a party! Yummy, yummy treats and loads of excited praise.

When you are outside with her, turn sideways to her and act disinterested while watching from the corner of your eye. Yawn. Look at a blade of grass. Whipping her has taught her that it isn't safe to potty around you so she isn't going to if you thinks you are watching. Be sure to take treats out with you so that you can reward immediately when she does get it right.

* Resizing pictures is the hardest part. You need picture software that allows you to shrink pictures out of your camera. If you don't have that, go to www.shrinkpictures.com.
* Shrink a picture to about 400 x 600 pixels.
* Create a post or a reply.
* Scroll down and click on "manage attachments"
* Click "Choose file" and find the picture on your hard drive.
* Click "Choose" and "Upload."
* Once it uploads, click "close this window"
* Click submit reply.

TO MAKE AN AVATAR
* An avatar is the little picture below your user name
* Shrink a picture to 75 x 75 pixels.
* Click on User CP in the blue bar at top
* Click on Edit Avatar at the left.
* Choose your picture.

Thanks for the info on how to post a pic. I did just buy a new digital camera and we are trying to hold still enough to take a pic and when I get her to calm down enough to do that I will try to post. Wish me luck and again thank you, and we are still having the potty problem she just doesn't get it, Thanks, ritak

ya i wouldnt whip a puppy with a newspaper that would scare them.
