Going for walks I want to be able to take Maggie on walks soon. She is 4 months old and so far I dont see walking in the near future. I have tried taking her down the street and she does fine for a while. Then all of a sudden she decides she wants to chew at my ankles and feet. I eventually pick her up and take her home in my arms. I try telling her "NO" but it doesnt make a difference. Anyone have suggestions ? Is she still too young ? |
I don't think she's too young... mine used to do this... and I would just snap the leash and say NO!! We also did "practice" walks in the backyard... and we'd practice leash etiquitte. Like, sitting at crosswalks, etc. I find my two do better if they EACH have someone walking them. My bf walks Jack, my maltese, and I walk Rosie. :D |
Penny's six months old, and I'm just now practicing in the yard. She's really not getting it though. She'll try to run, and of course she can only go so far, so she gets mad, sits down, and won't budge. It's kind of funny, because she is definetly hard headed, but I hope she gets it soon. |
She's not too young, you have to work on this straight away after all she does need to be excersised and stimulated. Try changing directions every time she misbehaves, this will result in you going up and down and not really anywhere which will annoy her and she will learn that if she wants to get to the park, she needs to walk nicely. |
I don't think shes still young. You just have to keep walking and say "come on girl" give her a treat along the way. Maybe even stop and take breaks if it seems to be a long distance for her. |
We are doing Beginner Obedience classes with our 2 guys. Last week we started the "Walking on a Loose Leash". The Trainer told us to expect it to take a year or more to get it down pat! So, I guess the moral here is: don't give up! My 2 guys aren't bad at it but they absolutely love going for a walk. As soon as I touch the harnesses, we have major excitement in the house! |
Are you allowing her to stop and smell the pee-mail? |
