Growling? My baby was chewing on a flossy yesterday and, when I got near her... she started growling at me!!! Then, when I tried to pet her... she SNAPPED at me!  She's not usually an agressive dog at ALL.... but I want to know how to break her of this!! Any opinions? I'm at a loss! |
oo this is bad for you. she thinks she's alpha. i'm sure some other members will have help. tell her "NO" sharply and take away the flossie. is this the only thing she does it with? |
 My does the same thing. I hope someone has an answer. |

Some start toy and food guarding when they reach about 6mos and up. I went through that with Buddy big time. You have to take it away from him and say no growling. And take it away. Next time sit with him while he chews on it for awhile then release it for a minute and then put you hand on it again. If he growls take it away. Tell him no growling. When he does not growl say good boy. This can turn into trouble if you don't stop it now when he's little. I didn't understand it much at the time but I learned big time when he got aggressive with me later on. Your pup is trying to be Alpha. You need to show him who's the boss. Good luck, |

way around. You must be her boss not only in this area but all other areas. When feeding her make her sit before you place her food down. Then put the bowl down. This will prevent future food guarding. Pet her as she eats, because once they guard it only gets carried over into almost everything. Food gurading, toy guarding, couch and bed guarding. She sounds like a trip.LOL Stay on top of her or your little yorkie will become not a nice pet to live with. |

I just recently started letting her have flossys and she LOVES THEM! My maltese doesn't have this problem... but he is MOST DEFINITELY NOT the alpha. :D |
Oh and P.S. my dad adds to the issue! He NEVER TELLS HER NO! When she growled at him... and I flipped out, he was like "She does this all the time!" And then she BIT HIM!!!!! and he was just like "Rosie... honey... sweetie... you can't do that to grandpa..."  |
I just recently started letting her have flossys and she LOVES THEM! My maltese doesn't have this problem... but he is MOST DEFINITELY NOT the alpha. I no longer give these to Buddy because he immediately go into his guarding personality. Certain things set him off and these are one of them. Also bully sticks etc. He can no longer have these treats. |

It's very important that Yorkies chew. Buddy is an aggressive chewer. I buy him white natural bones in the pet store. He chews them down! He does not react to these like he does to "food chews". No guarding at all. He's a complete love all the time but those chews set him off. Try these white bones. They come in different sizes, all natural beef bones cleaned already. Get a small size to fit her mouth. |
Try walking over to her when she is eating it and offer her something better (maybe a piece of chicken, anything she prefers to the flossy), she should drop the flossy and take what you have. Then you pick the flossy up and take it away with you. This way she learns that its good to give you things because she gets something better, eventually when she has the hang of it you can stop giving her the better treat because she will be pre programmed into thinking giving the chew to you is a good thing. Remember that these things take time so don't expect her to be perfect any time soon. |
I had the same question, because Penny is very food aggressive with the other dogs. I have to feed her separtely or she goes nuts. I'm thankful for all the input. |
Aubrey does this with his bones..lol. They think that you are going to take it away from them. When you give them something like that they enjoy, I give them their space and let them come to you when they are done. |
