Roll Over Hello everyone i was wondering how you taught your yorkies how to roll over. My husband has been trying for a few days now and lexi lays down and starts to roll over but only ends up on her back she can't make the complete rotation. So I was wondering how you taught your babies. We were trying treats but then she threw them up from all the rolling over so we are just praising now. She got sit in an afternoon, i was just wondering y this was taking so long to get. thanks |
I kinda just pushed Carter over once he was starting his roll. It only took about 10 minutes and he was on his way! You have to relate it to lots of praise (LOTS) or something else they value - such as throwing a toy for them to go get. Carter knows that I won't throw any toy for him unless he sits or downs or rolls over. He rolls over frantically to get my attention when I have a toy in my hand! Good luck |
I can't get Cookie to roll over either... :questione She lays down but when I try to get her to roll her little body over she doesn't really like it and jumps right back up!! I don't get it...I've tried on different occasions but its the one trick that has proven to be the most difficult. I've done it w/ treats, praises, toys, etc. I'll keep trying but if anyone knows of an easy way to teach it...please let us know. |
Sully can roll over! First, we taught Sully to do "dead dog" - and went from there with "roll over". The key is being consistent with your voice command AND hand signal. Also, be giving treats, whether it be a cheerio or what we used, nature's recipe training treats from petsmart. We started giving treats for every good move at first and then as they start catching on more, become more stingy with the treat-giving. It took a little work, but we were consistent and now he'll roll over in a cinch! :) Sully can also do: sit shake beg dance walk lay down spin around dead dog roll over crawl and 'take a bow'. :teethysmi |
When teaching roll over do you physically roll them over with your hand? I haven't tried teaching this trick, but I am trying lay down, and Trace really doesn't understand me pushing him down. He hops back up immediately. |
Rolling over and pads! I kept rolling him over with my hands, then gave him a treat. Now he's doing it at weird times. By the way, I was hunting for the best deal on pee pee pads, and I found that Sams Club sells 120 of incontinence pads which are 2 feet by 3 feet for $27. Hooley doesn't care that they are for old people and not doggies. They keep them with the Depends and other incontinence things in the part of the store with vitamins and drugstore stuff. I hope this helps someone. I noticed when i change a pad, he runs over and does a pp right away. Good BOY!! Also, he only wants to do a poop on a clean one. Also, speaking of saving money, I found out Walmart has a canned dog food called "Big Roy", and they are only 33 cents a can, and the doggies like it. |

Wow- Sully is a genious! How long did it take you to teach all those?! I'm still on "sit!" |
we physically roll lexi over bc she only rolls to her back not all the way. We are also working on shake. But how do you teach dead dog, beg, dance and all the others? I would love for lexi to learn a few more tricks. We are starting advanced training at petsmart on the 23rd. I hope she learns some more tricks when we start. She knows lay sit stay wait leave it come give it\and kinda roll over working on roll over and shake |
sit and lay she learned withing an afternoon I was impressed on how quick she got it but the other tricks have taken some time |
If lexi has the sit and down commands down good, then the roll over is easy. Maggie and I call it Bang Bang. While she is in the down position, I show her the treat. I take the treat and move is along side her body, toward the rear, then start moving it over her back. She watches the treat, and when it starts going over her back, she has to roll over to see it. While she is on her back, I give her the treat and say "Bang, Bang". |
Start by having your dog lay down on his belly. You can stand over him or kneel beside him. Using a treat, hold it by his nose, and then move it around and behind him, so that he lays on his side and then rolls over. Tell him what a great dog he is! |
