Help! My yorkie is chewing the walls... Yes... I know it's sooo strange...:confused: Bit as been chewing the corner of a wall. She's six month old and I never had problems with her chewing the furniture or anything but her toys. Since two weeks ago she started chewing the corner of a wall during the night. I've put this varnish to keep children from bitting their nails, a very bitter thing, in that spot but she keeps doing it. Does anyone have an idea why she's doing this and how can I stop it? Could it be that she is missing some vitamin, protein, whatever, in her food? I give her the best formula we can find here in Portugal, Royal Canin for small breeds... Isn't it suppose to be complete? I don't understand... |
Royal Canin is supposed to be one of the better dog foods. Try rubbing clear deodorant over the area - it worked like magic for us! |
I don't know why they do it either, but 2 out of three of mine did the same thing. I thought it was beacuse of separation, as they did it when I was not home. In total they destroyed the entire laundry room, a dinning room wall, a living room wall, just out side of my bedroom and then the wall by the door that I leave from. I had to start keeping them in crates when I was not home. Good luck. |
Me too!!! HELP!!! Mine started doing this recently, I thought about trying the no chew spray, we had a bottle but it's been misplaced in the move partly because we never had to use it!!! we can't have Vinnie chewing rented walls. HELP!! |
It's incredible the things they do... :confused: Thank you for the deodorant clue, I'll try it since the varnish didn't work. And yet I assure you it smells and tastes really awful, I tried it :D And I hope I wont have to redo the house because of this nasty new habit... I still don't understand the "why"... I suppose it's going to stay a mistery... She just started doing it, after several month here without chewing anything, so I really don't understand why now, nothing changed in our habits... |
some material they use in the wall makes it seem tasty. or it could actually be the texture of the material. sort of like ...um...what's that candy? divinity? it's sort of firm but crumbly in your mouth! there have been alot of posts about teething dogs who do this. my husband also had to putty up the bathroom walls after we left edgar in there during the day. they should grow out of it. just make sure you have alot more appealing chew toys around. good luck! |
As far as the "why", 3 possible explanations come to mind. First (and most likely) is boredom. Boredom is the number 1 cause for destructive behavior in dogs. Second, perhaps your pup isn't getting her chewing needs met. You might want to have more chew toys and bones around. Kibble is better than canned food for meeting this need and doing things to prolong their meals helps also. Things like toys that make them work to get to their food or simply scattering their kibble so that they have to hunt for it. These 2 things also help alleviate boredom. Third, if you pup is isolated away from you when this behavior occurs, it may be that separation anxiety is becoming an issue. |
Thank you... but... I do all that... :( I never give her canned food... She has LOTS of toys in general and all kind of chewing ones in particular... She does it when I'm not with her, that's a fact, but it's during the night, can she get bored during the night?... besides she has the company of my two cats... During the day I take her with me wherever I go and she has never chewed the wall on the rare occasions she stays home. The mistery maintains... ;) |
Our yorkie Chewie does the same thing but only when we leave durning the day. I talked to a trainer and he said he thinks it is from us leaving him and to give him lots of attention right before we leave and as soon as we come back. I tried this yesterday and today and so far he ahsn't chewed. |
bella and mickey lick my walls and chew the skirting boards. i tried stop chew spray and it didnt work, it was almost although they liked it:eek: . since then ive been advised to use lemon juice so am gonna try that:rolleyes: .also i think your baby might be getting their adult teeth so just make sure they have plenty of chew toys and maybe a kong filled with treats and put it in the freezer so their treats are frozen and the kong is frozen to soothe tender gums. good luck. |
I don't why she's doing it, but I've heard people have luck with the frozen kongs. |
Nothing seems to work... I've tried the bitter nail varnish, lemon juce, deodorant, and I even sprayed some perfume on the walls... She just doesn't care... |
Mine quit, after the clear deoderant was applied. She'd look for spots that didn't have it, and start up there....clear deoderant is cheap....so its all over my kitchen now, lol. Venus quit seemed after that, or maybe she's out of the chewing stage, I'm really not sure. She's now 14 months.. I had to re-sand and paint my NEW baseboards that were put down just 2 months before I got her. She chewed a hole in my lenolium floor. I've yet to figure out how she managed that! Now I have ceramic in the kitchen. So far, she hasn't managed to ruin it (yet).. She ruined the living room floor with pee...I have ceramic there and down the hall now. I used several things to try to get the smell out of carpet....but she'd always go back to the same place. I keep trying once in a while to put my throw rugs back down. Each time I try, she pees on them. So to the washer and back up for a few more months. So the good news, they do outgrow it. But not before you have some damage on your hands... |
Petrolium Jelly and Cayenne Chuck chewed EVERYTHING and loved the taste of the bitter stuff and tabasco. I read somewhere to mix petrolium jelly with cayenne pepper. It worked!! It will discolor it a little, but I just put it where he had chewed, it has to be repainted anyway. He whined a little at first and would drag his face around the carpet, but he got the hint way faster than I had expected. He hasn't chewed anything (other than his bones and toys) in a few months now. |
Mine have chewed my houses brand new expensive molding as well. I've tried all the bitter products and they just don't care. I'm trying the clear deoderant trick next, good tip! |

Bit as apparently stopped... (At least it's been a wile since she last chewed the wall.) But I can tell you, nothing apparently worked :mad: I just gave up... I tried everything you all suggested, the wall color was turning really strange :eek: , and I just gave up for some days... Then we went away on holidays for a week and left her at my sister's. When we came back she never did it again...:confused: By the way... even if she did it at my sister's, when she came back home she stopped peeing all over the house like before... :D Now she uses the pad or does it outside... She still as some "poop accidents" but not all the time... She must have thought she was being abandoned for being "bad", the poor little thing, now she really tries to be "good" ;) Or maybe she's just older... but then she "grew" a lot in one single week... I don't know... I don't care... I'm just really happy about it all... :p |

Cody had chewed 3 of my different corner of the walls. im in apartment. so i cant afford that either. friday night i had to put him in his pen and repaint all 3 corners. and today he started again . he has chew toys.. and we play. so he isnt bored. i dont know either. i thought about the bitter apple. but ive read some people said they had no luck with it. maybe i should try it?? and the clear deodrant. |
We are going through the same thing, We had our house built and moved in in November. So the house is only 8-9 months old....Brodie in his first week here had chewed 3 differ baseboard corners....Hubby only knows of one so far....So I am having the builder send over some men to "repair" Brodie's efforts. I am gonna try the deodorant also.....Keep your fingers crossed:confused: |
Wall licker Zoey is a wall licker. She licked the paint down past the plaster to the drywall. (2 spots...so far) Glad to know she isnt the only weirdo. |

Eating the walls When Rocky was a puppy he chewed on the kitchen wall - I had to block him off - then he started on the living room windowsill so I had to move the couch - then he finished off my coffee table which my poodle had started a couple of years before - then on to the bamboo bookcase, the living room drapes and digging a hole in the rug while I was trying to fix the drapes. Finally at 18 months it stopped!! Nothing deterred him. I'm lucky I have a house left! |

YEP ! been throught the chewing faze too ( well were still in it actually! ). Remy has chewed the corners of walls, base boards , patio window blinds , frontroom window blinds , a teatray , bedside table , sewing cabinet , dog beds ,unpaid bills ( they blew onto the floor ) etc. She doesnt do quite as much damage now but I still give her lots of giants size bully sticks and raw bones for chewing. The good news for you is it gets better in time, hang in there!:thumbup: Eileen |
