New puppy in the house Ok, we brought a new Rat terrier puppy(Casey) home last night. Our 3 yr old female yorkie Bella was very good with her last night, but this morning is a different subject. She will let the new puppy sniff and get close, but if she does not leave when Bella thinks she should Bella starts to growl. She does not show her teeth, or go after the puppy, she just makes noise. She has been around lots of other dogs before, but never one this young since she was that age. Do we just leave them alone and let them be and only interject when we think there might be trouble, or do we step in sooner? Also do we need to show extra affection and praise to the current dog so she doesn't feel left out or just treat her like nothing has changed? Thanks Amy |
I would treat them w/ equal affection for now and in the future they'll be comfortable together and you won't have to worry so much about that. Regarding the growling, let it be. For now. Supervize them when they're together and see if it subsides on it's own, if the puppy is learning how to properly interact w/ your Yorkie. If the pup is over the top and chaotic, I'd actually interject the puppies behaviors. Don't just chaulk it of to a puppy being a puppy. Now is the best time to start teaching manners. Your Yorkie will thank you. ;) If your Yorkie seems to be taking advantage of her position and is becoming a bully, interject. If she's jumping on the couch to avoid the puppy all the time or hiding, I'd stop that too 90% of the time. Don't "push" them together, but eliminate as many "hiding spots" for your Yorkie save one. This way it encourages her to figure things out and become a socialite w/ her new room mate. But if she becomes over whelmed, she has that one spot to retreat to and not multiples to learn to be posessive and nasty about the new comer. |
She is just letting him know who has seniority. He is a puppy, he knows his place and will learn where she draws the line. Try not to interfere. In a few days they should be getting along fine. |
