Some questions about a yorkie that I found.... Last week I adopted a male yorkie that this lady in my area said had wondered up to her house about two months ago. I have two other yorkies and he gets along well with them, other than when my 8 month old tries to play rough with him. He is only 5 and a half pounds to their 8 pounds. I took him to the vet last week and they estimated him to be about a year old. They also called him a "low quality" yorkie. What exactly do they mean by low quality? Puppy mill product? Also, he has a baaaad problem with snapping at people until he gets to know them. My brother and dad try to pet him and he growls ans pees everywhere. Then, when you let him outside to go potty he tries to RUN AWAY!!! I just spent ten minutes coaxing him back up the driveway. I don't have any of these problems with my other two yorkies so I am a little confused at what this little guy's history might have been like. I am wondering if he might have been a victim of serious neglect and abuse? Do you think he will get better with a little TLC, since he is so young or do you think this might be a long term issue that has permanantly scarred him? Any of your inputs would be helpful! |
You can guess and guess and guess but you will never know the true history of your little guy. Having been involved with yorkie rescue and keeping the worse of the worse (biters, crippled & old) I can tell you with time and a great deal of patience he will come around. He is frightened, scared and probably doesn't trust people a great deal. If he is only 1 years old and he is already on his 3rd home that you know about, he has reason not to trust. My gang came in kicked, starved, mistreated on all levels and even though they are a strange group they have all become very loving. How long have you had him? I would also advise you to not let him out loose (put a harness on him) until you build a stronger bond with him. It will be in his nature to run as humans have caused him to fear. When it comes to meeting new people do not push him. If he was beaten then his first reaction is to snap at people. I never let people pet mine until they have been around them for awhile. Low quality can mean a lot of things and he could have come from a backyard breeder. Someone who is just putting 2 dogs together. I am guessing the vet determined this from this teeth, legs and topline. My experience with my rescues is that they will never forget the harm done to them but they have forgiven. Dogs that come through these trama's will adjust but you have to be gentle and to always remember something happened to them. They will not be the same as dogs who grew up in loving situations. Let him give you the lead on what he will accept or not. Given time he will adjust to your loving environment. |
I am now on my fourth (and most difficult) rescue. Patience and love is the key to the whole thing. Again, you will never know what this little one has been through, but with time he will come around. You're lucky that you got him so young. I once got a 15 year old female who had obviously been a breeder in a puppy mill all her life. It took her a really long time to trust me. But, I was happy to know that at the very least, she wasn't cooped up in a cage any more, so I knew she had to be a little happier. My newest family member, Harry, is very much a mystery. It's taken almost two months for him to let me pick him up without a lot of cajoling. When my son came to visit today, he went straight to him and didn't flinch. So, I can only assume that he likes men more than women. Hang in there. It does get better. Do keep him on a leash and remember, lots of treats when he does something good. I pray you'll have a long, wonderful life together. I just love the rescues and will probably never have anything else. |
I have no eperience with rexcues, just words of encouragement. Good luck with him. Hopefully with time and patience he will be a loving trusting companion. |
Don't really have an answer for you but I am wondering if the lady you got him from or you had him checked for a microchip, or checked local papers and vets to see if he had been reported missing?? Someone could be missing their baby. |
Hello Scooter's Mamma: Welcome, to the site of information. Congratulations on your new family member; I was wondering did any one post a lost or stolen poster of your new baby in your area? Tulip |
The lady that I got him from had him for two months and posted up signs all in her area and nobody came forward and claimed him. He is not microchipped that I am aware of. He is neutured, which tells me that someone cared enough about him to get that done. (Unless of course he came from a breeder that required him to be neutered before he was sold.) I guess I will never know. I just have to let him know that he will not be harmed anymore in his new home. |
Did the vet scan him for a microchip? It might be worth a shot...poor guy must be scared to death..but in time he should adjust...definetly get him a little harness..I can never let mine run unfenced or they would run off too...and they love me lol...they just have never been off leash or unfenced and want to explore...he may never be able to be offleash...can you post some pics of this little man..Id love to see him and your others too!! I'm sure his problems are a result of poor treatment in the past and I hope that you will have the love and patience to get him through this. He can be a wonderful pet when he learns to trust and love again. God bless you for giving him a good home.:) |
