Is Invisible Fencing Right For Yorkies? My little Molly is giving me a run for my money. Now that she's 7 months old she thinks she's a big girl and has my number. I was training her to come back to me for treats and loving. Now she goes to the end of the drive way and looks back at me. If I don't call her back she will go in the road, if I do she comes running for the praise or treat, but does it again.... We used the invisible fencing when our dalmation was a youngster, now that she's 11 we don't even bother with it. Basically, I want input on small yorkies and invisible fencing. I asked my vet about it and she said that she has heard of it for small dogs like rat terriers but not sure if it is the right approach to use. It's not like I let her out on her own, but I don't want her to become a runner. What should I do?? |
I would be affraid b/c they are so small, but even more than that, invisible fencing doesn't keep other things out, which is just as important. Too many other dogs, animals, crazy people can just walk right in and snatch them |
As far as I know with the Invisible Fencing, the dog has to wear a shock collar at all times. I would be afraid that even the smallest amount of shock to their necks would not be good for our Yorkies. Plus it doesn't prevent anybody from comming into your yard and taking her. |
I'm against it for the reasons mentioned above. |
I have 4 out of my 6 Yorkies using the invisible fence. I live on a double ended cul d sac and our neighbors dont let their dogs run free. The amount of "shock" can be individualised for each dog. With the three week proper training which starts out with a "Clicking sound " raher than a shock is the way to train them. My Yorkie's learned very quickly where not to cross in the "clicking sound training period "and now know their boundrys and rarely get shocked. They learn quick and if they do get a little shock once in a while they never have suffered any injuries. We have the Original Invsible Fence system which is the ONLY one that is indorsed by the Humane Society. I never leave home when my babies are outside and when they are outside I am with them or wihin ear lengths of them. I have had the system 6 years and my youngest Yorkie learned so quick that we are able to keep the " clicking sound collar " on him rather than using a shock collar. He knows his boundrys and runs back at the sound of the first click. If I lived on a busy street I would have a fence but I think each owner has to make he decision to use it or not and not be judged as being a bad pett owner if they use he invisible fence system. JMO !!!! |
My mom got invisible fence for her two yorkies when we moved to our new house I think they were about 5 when they started on it. They have small collars but my mom only made the dogs wear them when we would go outside because they just seemed so heavy. The clicking sound scared our little max to death that's all he needed now he doesn't even tempt his boundaries when we take him outside with us. Mazie on the other hand won't leave the garage if we got outside that way because my mom accidently was holding her and went to the mailbox and walked Mazie right through the fence and it shocked her and scared her to death. |
I agree with what Janie Doyle said that each pet owner is the one to make the decision on what type of fence they feel best suits their needs. :) I hope I didn't offend anyone with my opinion on the invisible fence. That wasn't my intention at all. |
NO offense taken Dawn. Thank you for replying to my post with positve comment. Janie |
I would not use any kind of electric fence. Everybody has to make their own decision but I could never shock Ellie. I am sure it wouldn't phase her anyway. She would walk right through it because she is so nosey and inquisitive. |
I don't use it because I DO have some bad mannered neighbors who have dogs they let run free now and again, one is a pitt bull! Sometimes they just get loose from their owners and bolt off. Also, we have hawks and eagles in VA and they can swoop down and carry off a toy dog no problem. I've read stories about birds of prey, one grabbed a 10# dachschund and a boy had to fight for his dog and his dad had to help! I don't let mine out without adult supervision. |
