Marking in the house
 
Does anyone have this problem? Lola is 10 monthes old and is paper and outside trained and has not had an accident in three monthes.....the problem is when I take her to someones house or an office that has a dog she markes over the spot where she smells them. I thought only males markes their territory. How can I get her to stop this...it makes it hard to bring her anywhere.....help!

Yup, Ellie knows where to use the bathroom but when I take her to someones house (if they have dogs) and the pet store she marks. I asked this question and someone suggested maybe a squirt bottle of water so you can catch them in the act. I have not tried it yet but Ellie is very persistant so there is nothing we can do about some of her behavioral issues. The only thing left for us is positive reinforcement/clicker training which I hope works. I just carry her when we go places and next time I will probably put a diaper on her because she refuses to pee in one.

Thank you.....I am glad to hear Lola is not the only one....sometimes you get people who own other breeds and they say....isnt your dog housebroken yet????? I think I will try the clicker training. I hear good things about it!

They truely are a "special" breed! I have had dogs all my life, but this is my first Yorkie and never has one wormed its way into my heart so fast as this. One look into those round eyes and all is forgotten. Even my husband is under her spell.

So my "terrible twins" 2 wonderful darling little boys Danny the Tank and Little Eddie (1yr olds) - and we just moved to a new apartment- is this also common where the little ones like to mark?

Kobe is a male and he starting marking as soon as he turned 6 months. He is now 7 months, he was fixed a week ago and just the other day he was caught trying to mark our hamper...again.

I thought when you got them fixed they stopped have that urge to mark their territory.

After neutering or spaying it will take at least a month for hormones to settle down.
Yes females will mark as well as males.
If you are going to visit someone, put a belly band on the boys, bitch pants on the girls. Little brats that they are do figure out they can't mark anything wearing these things and eventually they will stop.

My Dunks used to mark our couches in the living room... Not just legs, but also on the couches itself... He's fixed and yes it took him about a month to stop marking, INSIDE THE HOUSE. However, he still marks when we're out - i.e. dog park, petco, etc... he's pretty good being at someone else's house... He did try peeing on my friends coffee table one time... I caught him in the act though and didn't try doing it again... We will see...

Good luck on your house breaking...

Bellybands are I heard very helpful with the marking when they are at someone else's house...

belly bands are great. I babysit a friends male and everytime he comes to my house to stay he has to wear them because he starts marking when he hits the door. I got mine from a YT member, put a poise pad in it and it wraps around Mr. Winkie and fastens with velcro!! they are great!! do a search for belly bands and you can see what they are.

Does anyone here have an adult male yorkie that is has not been neutered and having problems with him marking territory in the house? Mine just turned 4 years old back in may, and I'm worried that it's too late in the game to stop him from marking. After getting him neutered, do you think it's possible to stop this behavior if I scrub down my floors with nature's miracle and put a belly band on him for a while? Honestly, does anyone here think this would work? We are moving next summer and my husband said that he does not want my little dog to move with us if he's still marking because my husband doesn't want my dog marking every inch of our new home. I am really looking for some hope here!! I will try anything at this pont as I just can't bring myself to put him up for adoption.

First thing is to get him neutered. If you don't , even if you dont' use him for breeding, anytime he gets a whiff of a female in heat anywhere within a mile or two radius, he will increase his marking.
It will take 1-2 months for the hormones to settle down after neutering. Use a belly band in the meantime, they soon will learn that they can't mark wearing one and will eventually loose the habit but with an intact male, they will continue to mark.
I have problems with my intact females as well and they are all delegated to one part of the house only or they would be marking all over my house.
