How to leash train??? Hi we recently adopted a 10 month old yorkie girl. I try to get her to walk with her leash on put she refuses to walk. I also bought a harness and still she will not move. Andre' my 1 year old male yorkie has never had a problem with his leash he even knows that when i take it out it means its time to go outside. Any suggestions on how to get her to walk with her leash? |
I would start with one thing at a time. Try the harness first. Put it on her loosely and then play with her. Help her to associate the harness with something fun. Leave it on her while you can supervise her, remove it when you cannot. When she seems comfortable with the harness, attach the leash. Just let her drag it around until she gets used to it. Gradually, she will get the idea. Just remember to give lots of praise and make each encounter with the harness and leash fun! Also be sure that she sees you put a harness and leash on your other Yorkie and sees you walk your other Yorkie with the harness and leash. Once she gets comfortable dragging the leash, start the walking. Tell her to come on and hold a treat at your side where she can reach it. Just walk slow, holding the treat and coaxing her. She will get it. |
I agree with what was said above. You should have seen my Ryo when I first put a leash on ryo he acted as if it was the end of the world. I put it on him and walked away and he sat in the same spot without moving, for up to a half hour if i would have left it on. he would NOT move until I removed the leash. It was like normal with no leash and a frozen yorkie statue with the leash on , my son and I would laugh so hard because he was so obstanant. Just take things one step at a time make it fun and make him//her forget that she even has a leash on by playing. |
Here's what Tampa did. Tampa is 11 weeks old now and walks on his leash in our condo every day. We started him early last week. Initially he fought with his harness, but eventually got used to it. We just left it on while we played with him on the floor. At first his front legs would walk when using his leash, his back legs however would drag. lol. That stopped after the 4th time. Now his back legs are slowly walking along with his front legs. He's getting used to it. ;> Tampa's one heck of an entertainer. On friday night we were playing with him when he jumped and barrel rolled in the air and landed on his feet. WOW! Love this breed.. Luckly he's not a barker.... yet.. :< :> |
