I can't get Lucy to potty outside during our walks. I've tried everything. She isn't enamored with the grass like other dogs. She loves to walk but she's not much of a sniffer and no matter how long we walk she will not go. She will hold it and then go on her pad when we get back. Any suggestions? I really want her trained to go both outside and on pads. |
How old is she? Phoebe goes outside and in the pads but it took some time to get it:aimeeyork |
Hi, I also have the same problem, Oscar has been going walkies for about three weeks now and he is 5 months old. He hasn't learnt to "go" outside yet either, he loves sniffing he grass and playing around but no wee as yet! I presume it is because it is all still new to him and he doesn't feel confident to do his business yet. I am sure once he gets older and his confidence improves it will happen. If it doesn't I will just have to keep him out until he does it - just once will break the habbit but I won't worry about that yet. |
Piper will go outside if I make him stay in the yard with me, and he's 4 years old. Penny will go out, but then come back in, and go. I always wondered if it was because they are so short that the grass bothers them? |
KathyinCali, It may be the grass she objects to, but it may also be the leash that she doesn't like. Some dogs refuse to poop while on a leash. I had a husky like that. Do you have a fenced yard that she can practice in? If so, I'd take some of her poop out there and leave it. When you think she may need to go, take her out and have her smell the old feces (dogs often stimulate themselves to "go" by smelling old feces). You may have to stay out with her for ages and ages, but be ready with really yummy treats. If she does go outside, treat heavily and praise in an excited little-girl voice like she just cured cancer! Make it party. Good luck! |

Thank you for the responses all :) We have a huge back yard but it is pool decked rather than grass. I can get her to do both on a potty pad out there but I do need for her to be able to go when we are out and about. She gets very excited when we put her leash on as she knows she's going for a walk. I guess I'll just keep trying :) |
I know this is gross, but if you see other dogs' poop laying around while you're out walking, lead her to it so that she can smell it. It might stimulate the need to eliminate. Be sure to arm yourself with treats before you go out walking so that you are prepared to reward heavily if she does do what you want! |
