Chewing on Wee Wee Pad Hi, I keep my 14 week yorkie in a 2' x 6' playpen. The pet store recommends house breaking by confining him most of the time. I keep him in there for a few hours and let him out to play for about 1/2 hour to an hour. He sleeps in there and also is now trained to go on his wee wee pad inside the playpen. However he loves to bite and rip the wee wee pad where he has pee'ed and sometimes even chews and swallows the little pieces that breaks off. Why is he doing that and how can I stop him from doing it? thanks, Daniel |
This is a common problem. You might try a pad holder or buy some washable reusable pads. I use the washable pads and they can't tear them up. They are a little expensive at the beginning, but well worth it. Each can be washed up to 200+ times! So that' like getting 200 disposable pads. I have a few extra that I can sell you if you would like. Let me know. Oh, and Welcome to YT. You will learn a lot here. I know I did. There are some really nice people on this forum. |
Attach that expen to the front of a wire crate, making sure the crate is on the "outside" of the pen area. This should the be his living quarters. Attach a water dish to the pen itself. Make sure he has a chewy, a femur bone (cooked and all meat removed from the outside and inside) and is taken outside every hour for play and potty for at least 15 minutes. If he is getting enough exercise and enough to chew on, he shouldn't be chewing the pad. Babies need frequent potty and play breaks. It's a good time to put his harness and leash on each time you go out. Let him lead the way so as to get used to the harness and leash. Give him a gentle turn around to go in the opposite direction. If at anytime he fights the leash, let up immediately. Never force it. Let it be fun for him. |
