I need a little encouragement... At almost 4 months Molly has turned into a little biting, running away, rebellious terror. :( Well, she does still have some good moments, but most of the time she is being a real stinker. She bites everything and everyone she can, won't mind unless there is a treat involved, and hyper, hyper, hyper. I've been trying to use my "calm, assertive energy" and rewarding her for behavior that I like. I'd really like to hear that this is probably a puppy phase, and that if I remain consistent with discipline, affection and reward that we will get thru it like we made it thru the "terrible two's" with my son...right??? Thanks for listening. Carla |
Yes, definitely, this phase will pass. There is hope. There are things you can do to speed this phase along. There are hundreds of posts here about dealing with biting and teaching "come". It would help you to do a search and read some of those threads. Then, if you want more help with specific behaviors, let us know what you need. But, if you just want encouragement, you got it! Hang in there! |
I agree there is hope. Puppies are full of mischief and that is why it's so important to begin the training process as early as possible. So just keep up the disciplining and be consistent and somewhere along the line you will notice that she will behave better and better. Mostly what you are trying to do is establish good habits, but you have to build them into habits, first. I think if she is responding to treats at this point, then thats ok. Just treat away, even if this feels like bribery to you. Later on (much later) you can begin to wean her off the treats and just give her positive reinforcement with your praise and attention. |
Thanks for the notes! Yes, I have been reading the posts on biting and such. I don't know where I'd be without them!! I did practice with her Tuesday night on staying in her bed while I went to get a carrot. It took fifteen tries, but I stayed consistent and finally she did it. Last night it only took two tries, so that is progress. I just needed a little encouragement...thanks!! Carla |

We walked for 30 mins last night. It had just rained, and we have a gravel driveway. She went thru every mud puddle she could find...ha! So she had to have a bath after our walk. She was a little calmer after that, but not much. We will keep that up, though, as often as possible. I swear, what I was told is dead-on. It is just like having another baby!! Your life is not your own for a while. As for the biting, I tried the hint I found on here about putting my finger sideways across her mouth. It didn't stop the biting, but I think she was getting the message. I'll keep up with that. She was sweet and cuddly this morning though!!     So the hard work is all worth it! Carla |
I can completely understand what you're going through right now! My Tobi behaves the same way sometimes, so I asked our trainer what we should do to "fix" the situation. Our trainer told us that we have to "change" his behaviour by re-directing him to some more productive behaviour like training tools. If your pup is acting up, start practicing the "sit", "come", "stay" kind of stuff and reward them with tons of affection and a few treats. We tried this today when Tobi was turning into a terror, and it worked REALLY well! Good luck to you and your fur baby!!! :) |

skoshi used to do the same thing lol he would have our pants legs as soon as we got up and we were dragging him everywhere we went because he would play tug a war with our pants lol. He would never cuddle aways wanted to play when you touched him. but now he has calmed down a whole lot he is almost 7 months. |
I felt pretty hopeless at that stage too! It is a puppy phase, and it will pass. Just think, we thought the beginning was tough? haha Good luck!! |
