Tips on training "down" We just can't get Mickey to understand the command "Down" (as in "Lie Down"). We have tried the text book... putting a treat in front of him on the floor and moving it away slowly, but he gets right up and goes for it... He just doesnt get the whole "down" concept! Any suggestions? Also, how did you teach stay? So far MIckey knows his name, Sit, Come, Give Paw, Give the other Paw, and Bedtime (go to his home). He'll be 6 months this week. Common guys, help me out.... the BF said once he learns these 2 commands I can start looking for his little sister! Thanks!! ;) |
Do you get him to Sit first? I did Sit and then put the treat on the floor...she followed. |
Yes... we go from a sitting position. He just wont follow the treat.... |
Try just putting the treat closer to him & not moving it away. Far enough away for him to actually go down, but not so far that he has to get up. Keep working on it...some of them take longer than others! I had trouble getting SAdie to do some of her commands. But she eventually got them. |
yep, tell him to sit first. (also have leash and collar/harness on) and put the treat in front of his nose and at the same time, pull the leash gently down, following the treat. As soon as he's laying down, make sure he stays there, then he gets the treat and lots of praise. To teach stay, you get them to sit or down, then place your hand in front of their face and tell them stay. If they move, you tell them 'no, stay' and put them back into their original position. Also a gentle tug on the leash helps. Once they stay (just a few seconds the first time) give them a treat in their position and lots of praise. |

What finally worked for Milo was the right treat, one he could not resist. If you find it he will "down" . ;) |
Yayyyy!! We got itttt!! Thanks everyone! Tomorrow we will work on 'Stay'! :D |
I finally got it by using a better treat, i.e. a piece of cheese. Now she does it for any treat but I can't seem to get her to do it without the lure, or at least my hand doing the lure gesture! It took her awhile to get the sit, too, so I guess I'll just keep trying! |
