pulling First, when I take my yorkie for a walk, he pulls me and does not walk with me, how do I get him to walk with me and not pull me? Also, he has been fixed and he still rides on us, what is with that? |
I'm all over this thread. Otis does the same thing. The harness helps, but he's just a wild man. I'm sure there is some sort of training that we should be doing. Maybe an obedience class or something! I'll be checking back to see what kind of suggestions you get... Good Luck |
Bella's in obedience right now. I tell her heel and she walks on my left side. Not in front nor behind me. I use a treat right in front of her nose to keep her walking with me, then praise her tons. When we stop, she should sit and when she sits, she gets her treat. If they do pull, you're supposed to give them a gentle tug on the leash and tell them to heel again. It takes some practice but Bella's getting it down. We're on our 6th week of training so far. |
i taught morgan to walk with me from the moment we started going on walks. She prefers walking on my right, even tho i tried getting her on my left many times. I started out walking her on a 4 foot leash and kept her close to my side. Every time she would pull ahead i'd give her a little tug and say heal, or i give her a tug and do the Caesar "shhht" sound. That sound gets her attention and puts her back in her place. Its also useful in getting her off people's lawns and to stop her from sniffing in one place to long while we're trying to actually walk. |

Thought it would help. I love Ceasar. |
I've heard of a couple different ways to teach your dog to walk. All of the above suggestions are good ones. I've also heard that whenever they pull you, you stop in your tracks and wait until they stop tugging. When they do, you can call them back to you or just proceed your walk. The moment they start pulling again though, stop again. This method takes time, and your walk may end up being 230948 hours long, but it can work too. You're just trying to teach them that they are not going anywhere until they learn not to pull. I would combine this with having them walk beside or behind you (call them back or gently tug) ..and never in front of you. Good luck! |
I always started mine on shorter leash that way they don't have a chance to pull . |
The Gentle Leader harness works really well for pullers, also. |
