running out the door? My dog runs out of the front door every chance she gets! How do i make it so that she wont run out the door but she will just stand infront of it? :eek: |
With a lot of training! But until then it's important not to let her get out. With the possibility of car accidents, dognappings, etc. it's up to us to be diligent in keeping them safe. In my house (and my boys are college age) I have a sign on all my doors that reads "do not open this door until the dogs are secured! I don't care who it is or how long they have to wait." I also keep a crate near the front door so if the bell rings and they run to the door, I put them in the crate to answer the it. (the bathroom is another good alternative). I don't even know if mine would run out the front door, but I don't want to find out. Maybe try training her with some kind of barrier or gate beyond the front door (like a "U" shaped X-pen) until she gets it, but even then I'd be cautious. |
I've just been working a couple weeks with my two oldest on this. I have them on their leads and before I open the door, I make them sit and tell them to wait. After they are sitting nicely, I open the door - at first they try to run out but I make them sit again and wait again. Now they are getting so good at it! Sometimes I just have to clear my throat and look at them and they will sit and wait. :) I actually started doing this for the pack leader role thingy. The human should always go in and out the door first. It takes a little work but Yorkies are so smart, they catch on fast. :thumbup: |
I recently started puppy obedience with my Tobi, and the trainer said that you should train your pup to sit on either side of doorways (of all door ways). So, before you open the door, have the pup sit down. When you pass through the door, have your pup sit down again. Try practicing this with your pup on a leash if you're heading outdoors. I would practice this with you pup indoors first, and slowly move outdoors. I'm doing this with Tobi now, and it takes a little bit of patience, but it's starting to work. The trainer said that the purpose of this excercise is to keep control of your pup, and to keep your pup safe..that way if you take your baby shopping or are leaving home, you know your pup will be safe at your side. Although, what I do now, b/c Max will run to the door if anyone is there, race in circles, barking maniacally, and I have to catch him and pick him up before I open the door, or he will rush whoever is there:( . Maybe working with him when NOBODY's at the door would be a good plan, hehe. They do learn fast though! |
I have a baby gate for the front door if someone comes. but if I am just going out the door ....well, it has taken some time but I say "stay" and you know it has started working! |
I've been using the command "back" in a stern voice, then sit and stay. They've been doing great!:thumbup: |
When Aubrey and I went to pet training we learned "wait." And I would practice that at the door, so now when I open the door he want run out there, he will sit, until I look both ways and then When I say "lets go" he will come out. Training is the key for your dog, not to run out the door. I did my training at Petsmart, and its not all that expensive, and it really helped! |
This is all mighty helpful..I have the same problem with Daisy sometimes. There are times when she's really excited with someone being at our door and will go nuts and the minute I open the door she'll run out. Thankfully we have two front doors (a mini entrance hallway in between the two doors) so we always catch her and put her back inside the house. Then there are times when she's in a calm mood and she'll stand by my feet as I go to open the door, I then turn and face her and say ''STAY!", and she usually does. A little trick I've learned that works is when I turn my whole body to face her, she will stop walking and look at me. |
I have this problem with Otis. Oliver stands back, but Otis is wild, and he would be gone. I thought I was the only one with signs on the door. I had a roommate for awhile that was a flight attentdent so she had luggage to pack up every time she flew. I was a nervous wreck that he was gonna run out while she held the door open for her suitcase. My sign says... Watch for Otis...he's a runner! I always pick him up. I haven't had success in training, but maybe I'm not diligent enough. |
Escaping!!! We have an expen set up in the front hall around the front door to prevent bolting out the front door. Yes, it had happened. My :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork little escape artists have gotten out the front door and down the street they go...so the expen does prevent that from happening. A bit of an inconvenience for us to move aside whenever we enter the house, but a precaution well worth it. |
