HELP! Obediance class & training (aka: choke) chain? I just went to an orientation for Jolie's basic obediance class and this trainer prefers to use a "training chain" (aka: choke chain). I asked if there is a diffent method I can use because I don't want to cause any damage to the trechea and she suggested a "Pinch" chain... Does anyone have any suggestion? Do all classes use this method? I don't know if I should take her now but I need a structred class or else I don't follow through on a regular schedule - I am confessing, I'm a Major procastinator so without a class I won't get the job done. HELP! |
I would NOT attend classes with this instructor. First, she obviously doesn't understand the danger involved with collars and Yorkies and second, it's also quite apparent that she uses punishment-based methods. Look for a trainer who uses positive methods only. Yorkies respond extremely well to positive methods. I'm sorry it isn't working out for you. I am sure that you were excited about starting classes (and good for you, for signing up and getting off the "procrastination wagon"!). Please, though, don't let your disappointment lead you into a class that might make things worse rather than better. Okay? I hope you can find someone else soon while you've got the motivation! |
Choke chain for a yorkie? I'm not quite sure about that. I recently enrolled my Tobi in puppy obedience classes, and I did a lot of research to find the right place for Tobi. Not ONCE throughout my research did I find a company that endorsed choke chain training for a puppy....they almost all claim to use positive enforcement (treats and praise). I'm still a newbie when it comes to yorkies and training, but I would never make my Tobi endure choke chain training. I'm sure there are many MANY other places you can find that uses positive enforcement to train your pup. Good luck to you and Jolie! :dogsm3: |
Do they even make choke chains that small? Most training programs I've gone to don't use choke chains as punishment, only as an attention getter, and if you are pulling the chain hard enough to do damage then you probably don't know what you are doing. |
If the whole idea of a choker scares you, or the trainer is wanting you to use it in a harmful way, maybe you could look into clicker training? |
I am also starting training with my pup and we are going to do clicker training and use Tellington touch methods :thumbup: . I wouldn't go to a class where choke chains :thumbdown are used. I spoke to my trainer about this and she said that there are much better ways to train a puppy. I think you should keep looking. |
I was very impressed with trainer that owns the facility where I took Chizzie to obedience class. She sent out her "recommended list" of training equipment which included "pinch collars". Since I would not use a collar I contacted her and explained the yorkie/trachea issue. She was well aware and told me that SHE did NOT dictate what type of equipment to use on a client's dog, only made recommendations. She also said that it might take longer for Chizzie to "get" some lessons. This is a fantastic high level agility trainer/competetor. She GUARANTEES her training for the life of the dog. Once you go through her class you can repeat that same class as many times as you want! Chizzie and I didn't finish 'cause I got sick, that was two years ago.... one of these days we'll go back. A couple of suggestions... If the instructor doesn't want to use an alternate method, maybe a different instructor? We went to a class at Petsmart and they used clicker training. It worked wonderfully. I also have considered a private class (which would cost more) and it would be geared towards my dogs needs. Is it possible that you could get private classes W/O choke collar? Hope you find what suits your needs! |
