Can my Yorkie sleep in Bed with me? I was wondering if it was possible to crate train and have your yorkie sleep in bed with you at night...do the two actions contradict each other???? If I can do both at what age should I put her in bed with me?:) |

I crate trained Buddy and at 5months he was trained. He, however, did not sleep with me until he was around 1yr. I kept putting him on the floor but he was persistant and kept jumping up on the bed all night long. He won out in the end. I just gave up! |
We decided to let my Winston sleep with us. We have a California King bed, so we sleep a bit further on the edge, and Winnie goes in the middle, on his doggie bed, surrounded by lots of doggie blankies just in case he has an accident. So far, he hasn't had one !!!! I guess it just depends on if you're willing to risk it or not? |
Hi, its definately possible to do but not until your baby is fully potty trained. Both my yorkie girls and my pekingese sleep in bed with us. My pekingese potties outside so he never gets up through the night. My one girl is quite small and even with puppy steps she can't get on and off the bed. However, she potties before we got to sleep and she's fine all night until morning. My other girl uses the steps and will get up through the night to go potty (if she has to) and will come right back to bed. Again, definately possible but only once they're trained, unless you want pee pee in your bed, LOL :) Good Luck with the training. :) |
Thanks for the info..I guess I;m just being selfish and I want her all to myself at night! LOL. I'll def crate her until good habits are established. Thanks all! :D |

The main reason people on this site use a crate is for potty-training. If your pup still needs to be crated because she isn't reliable, then she also might not be reliable at night. |
uh-oh Sargie is almost 6 months old and I have had him for 2 months. He slept in a basket the first few days I had him but then barked to be on the bed. I made sure he was on all sorts of blankets etc. to absiorb any accident. Then I realized he was half-trained (never went on sofas, bed, me...!) and gradually the blankets disappeared. He sleeps down near the foot of the bed. He has never, ever had an accident - he gets up in the middle of the night and goes to his pad if he needs to go, then comes back. However, if you read my posts on the Training Spray website, you'll see Sargie is not fully trained...he still leaves droppings where he wants and sometimes (rarely, but sometimes) wets in the wrong spaces. Thing is, he will get up in the night to go find the wrong spaces - but at least he gets up and leaves. I guess my point is that it might be contradictory to crate training, but in my case even a half-trained Yorkie is smart enough not to soil your sleeping area (if it's his)! So it probably won't be long before you can have him with you. |
Both of my girls sleep with me. Izzie is only 12weeks and she makes it through the night just fine. I am a very light sleeper though and wake up everytime she moves. I'm more worried about her falling off:eek: |
My little Conner was about 4 months old when he started barking to get on the bed to be with us. He was pad trained then. We kept him in a baby playpen with his bed and a pad next to the bed. I gave in and put him in the bed. The thing is, when he had to go potty, he would lick my husband's face until he woke up - he would never potty in the bed. He is now 15 months old, fully trained to go outside and still licks my husband's face if he has to go during the night (he woke hubby up at 3 a.m. this morning to go potty)!! He lets his mama sleep. Usually he sleeps through the night - it's only about once every few months that he has to go during the night. |
My boys are potty pad trained. They have access to them during the night. They never pee in the bed. I'm not sure I could sleep without them in my bed. |
Day 4 of Winston sleeping in bed with me....and he'd BEEN sleeping just fine through the night..until last night. He woke up and started licking my face, so I took him to his pad. He went potty, and then decided it was play time. The only problem is...it was 3:45am. Needless to say I had a VERY long night. :( I put him in his play pen area and he kept barking on and off, so I had to stay up and continue going into the living room and telling him "NO". He finally laid down in his crate & fell asleep around 5am. Being a mommy is exhausting!!! |
Gracie has been sleeping with me since before she was potty trained when she would move around i would bring her outside she never used it in my bed! Now she is pee pad trained and she goes down her stairs and uses it and then back to bed on her own! We tryed the whole staying in a crate thing at night didnt work she would cry and cry needless to say that didnt even last a week! im glad though i prefer her sleeping with me and wouldnt have it any other way! |
Yes, I put Mugzy in bed with me and crate trained him both. SO, at night he would come in bed. If he got up (I sleep light) I'd take him outside. If it happened too many times, I'd stick him in the crate because I need sleep too;) But, after the first few weeks, he really didn't get up. Now for the crate, I'd usually use it around bedtime. I'd put him in it when I got my shower (and take the crate in with me), for a few minutes before bedtime, etc. so he got used to it. I really only use it though when we go to church because most of the time someone's home. I keep his crate next to my bed anyway, so he can see me, hear me, etc. :animal36 |
i have no suggestions. all 3 of ours sleep in the bed with us. we are getting another this weekend and i think she will be in the bed as well |
I tried to crate train mt baby at night, but so guilty! I decided to try him on the bed with me and my husband. (Actually it was more my hubby's idea!) He never once went on our bed. He would wake me up at 2 or 3 am though to go out! I think you should do what feels right with you and your puppy! |
Sleeping in my bed I have three Yorkies and my little Biewer Boy Schatz. Maybe I am just lucky they all slept with me from day one and I can remember only one accident from my frist Yorkie Saydie, but she wasn't well at the time. Had a bit of a fever. I do wake up when one of them moves around and place them on the paper next to my bed and they go potty and get back up in bed. |
Cozy has slept in bed with me almost since I got her. Since she was not soiling her crate I put her in bed with me one night and she stayed locked to me all night. I can crate her during the day as long as I am not home otherwise she wants to be attached to me. She is a mommy's girl. |
I put Tj up in the bed with me at about 2 and a half months i built a little ramp (everyone makes fun of me!!) it is a bunch of pillows and blankets between the wall and the bed and he has a peepee pad in the bedroom the door stays shut he didnt get the run of the house until recently (5 mo) but he would go up and down the ramp to go potty and never had an accident. the bedroom door stays shut during the day and he knows that when we go into the bedroom it is sleepy time not play time. hope all works out. i love cuddling at night it is a great reward after a long day! |
I was a wimp, she slept with me from day one I did, she never peed in the bed. She would cry to get down, and I would take her to her puppy pad or outside. It made potty training easier. She was potty trained, really fast But, now she hates being in her crate..so be careful what you decide. |
Johnny Cash is not even 6 months. For the first two weeks I had him, I put his crate up on the nightstand and he slept in it with the door closed, next to me. By the third week, he was sleeping in the bed. He has never ONCE urinated on the bed. {knock on wood} The potty training book that I read made a point of stating that when dogs are asleep, their bodily functions slow down....which is why they don't have to go to the bathroom when sleeping for 8 hours as often as they do when they are awake for 8 hours. I'm a night owl, so I don't go to bed until midnight. I usually wake up at 5:45AM to get ready for work. So, Cash can usually sleep through the night and will wake me around 5:30AM (15 more minutes PLEASE...just 15 more minutes!!) licking my face or as he likes to do....literally digging into my head ( :rolls eyes: ) to let me know he has to go NOW DAMMIT, NOW!!!! Tahoe is a different story. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this with their dog, but I have caught Tahoe doing something unusual and I'm not even sure it's what I think it is. I will wake up really early to the sound of Tahoe licking himself. I have drawn the conclusion that he is peeing a little at a time and drinking it. (Gross, I know) Obviously, I don't encourage this so I get up and let him out, but I'm pretty sure he picked that up along the way. (He's 14 and I adopted him at 10.) ~ Kelly |
