New to the site Hi All! Just wanted to say hi. I have a 7 month old yorkie - Max! He is a great! Not sure what it was like before he came along, must have been kind of boring. I had a miniature schnauzer before and lost her 2 years ago. I love the yorkie breed. The only and big problem I am having with Max is getting him to tell me when he needs to go outside. He doesn't think anything of going right in front of me. I tell him no and take him outside but he still insists on going inside when he needs to go. I love him dearly but am ready to pull my hair out. I got Max in the middle of January and living in Iowa it was below zero. I used pads this winter because it was so cold for him. We tried to go outside but sometimes it was just to darn cold. He would use the pad when I was at work but would potty on the floor when I was home. Now I have taken the pad away and he holds it most days when I am gone but other days he goes on the linoleum. I would appreciate some help - when he goes inside do I just tell him no and take him outside like I am doing and will he eventually get the hang of it? I haven't scolded him. |
Hey there and welcome. Also, welcome to the potty problem club! I have the SAME problems you described. Lily goes where ever she darn well pleases. If outside, she will go (sometimes) or she may decide to hold it till gets back on the carpet. Anyway, you are in good company. :p |
welcome :D! |
Hi and welcome to Yorkie Talk! I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Schnauzer, I know how hard it is to lose one. Really happy to hear you have Max now. Yorkie's at times can be difficult to housebreak so hang in there. If you'd like to share, Id love to see pics of Max. :D |
Thanks to all! I just found this site and I think it is great!!! I will post a picture of Max to show everyone. He had 5 baby teeth removed yesterday but is doing great. |
Welcome!!!!!!!!!! |
Hi, Welcome to YT. Potty Training is so awful. I get frustrated with my pup because he is perfect somedays and then others are bad!!!!! I find that sometimes it is necessary to "retrain" a little. If Chewy has a problem, I will revert back to crating him at all times and letting him out to go potty and only letting him play after he has gone and then back in the crate. Tough Love a little, it works. I also I would keep the we we pads available for him and every so often take him to it and tell him to pee, potty, whatever word you use...and don't let him leave the pad unless he pees. Good Luck! |
Welcome to YT its great to have u with us ;) |
Just wanted to add our welcome to you and your baby! |

Hi Mishelle: Check out some of the old threads on crate training. This should help tremendously. Always keep him in a place where you can supervise him. This is where crate training really works. They don't like to poop where they sleep. Be patient and consistent. It will happen!! :thumbs_up |
First let me say Welcome to YT. Here you will learn a lot of valuable information to raise a healthy baby. Whatever method you prefer on potty training is totally up to you. The major catch here is that choose only ONE and stick to that ONE. Everytime you choose to do something different, your baby is totally confused. One day it's okay to pee on the floor and the next day it isn't. Not to brag too loud, but Maggie is 14 weeks old and housebroken. It was hell, and a lot of sleepless nights, but we did it. She is trained for outside only. We did it by taking her outside around the clock every two hours. Yes, during the night, rain, cold, wind, you name it, we did it. Now she rings a bell hanging on our back door knob. So, any method will work. You must be consistant at all times and stick with that choice of training. Should you slack off, then the baby will slack off too. |
Welcome Mishelle and Max!!! Love the spelling of your name! I knew a girl in high school with the same spelling. You will get tons of great advice here!!! We all love our yorkies. Can't wait to see your baby so we can ooooooooh and aaaaaaaaaaaah over him! |
Welcome to you & your baby! WELCOME Mishelle and Max from another newbie. I have to give Yorkie talk a thumbs up. I love talking about yorkie tales with people that understand ;) I adopted Jojo when he was 2yrs old. He was soooooo not housebroken. I don't have a special formula but I really think it was like Texas Aggie said...You have to be consistent. I just kept walking Jojo at the same time everyday. And I put the bell on the door. He resisted for a while. But (knock on wood) now I can safely say he is housebroken. He even rings the bell!! Sometimes he rings it with an attitude as if to say "take me out now" :p So my suggestion is to be patient. There were some days that I just cried because I was so frustrated and tired of cleaning up after him. But it will get better. Hang in there! |
Hi and welcome to YT. I am so glad you have Max. By the way, I have the same problem with my pooch she will be outside playing and we'll come inside and she will go potty right in front of me. She even stares me in the face when she goes. She is quite a little lady but with terrible manners. GENIE AND EDI |
