Discipline? What is the best way to discipline a puppy when you catch them doing some thing wrong, ie, you catch them having an accident, chewing furniture, etc.? I dont want to spank her, but if I just glare at her and tell her no and move her along, she does it again. |
I used a soda can with pennies in it. After I said no, I shook the can and he hated it!!! Of course, he still is not well behaved. He just goes and does the things he is not supposed to do while I am not looking!!! |
i always believe in not scolding when they have a potty accident cause it means you werent watching instead praise them for going in the right spot they dont know there not suppose to go on the floor all they know is they have to go and you didnt take them out when chewing on things again the persons fault take the bad thing out of there mouth and put something there allowed to chew on in and praise them |

What about when you spend 20 minutes with her outside, telling her to GO POTTY 10000 times, come inside and she pees on the tile in front of your face? |

Again, I would immediately pick her up and put her outside-midstream! Have you tried peepads inside? I think the pennies in a soda can to get their attention and stop doing something they should be doing is good. Also a water gun...I was told by our trainer to try that and aim at their forehead between the eyes! Yikes! Not sure if I'd aim there? I would not scold and definately not spank  She won't get the idea that way either. Gemma is a toughie but I know I'm not doing my job in potty training her correctly. So I just clap my hands and she'll stop and I take her to the peepad. |
i still woudln't scold... if you can catch her mid pee... i say a loud AH AH... grab her and bring her outside... and even if she doens't keep peeing out there.. i'd praise her and give her a treat... potty training is THE hardest thing with these little guys and scolding is just going to make it take longer... she'll try hiding from you to pee so that you dont' get mad... so try and stay away from that.. but for chewing and what not.. the can works well or just a loud. HEY.. or AH AH... works well for us! |

Interrupt inappropriate pottying and take her outside to finish. Do not scold or punish. You will end up with a dog who hides to potty in the house. Not one who stops pottying in the house, but one who does it under the sofa, in a closet, etc. Instead, praise and heavily reward (with the yummiest treats you can think of - like liver or garlic chicken) appropriate pottying. Won't potty when you are outside with her for 20 minutes? Then stay 30. Or 40. Whatever it takes so that you can reward good behavior. Chewing furniture? Put clear roll-on deodorant on it and be sure that 1) your pup has plenty of other things to chew on and 2) she is getting plenty of exercise. Good luck! |

I think potty training is much easier if you can give the dog constant supervision and be completely consistent. I haven't had any problems with Jake. I would catch him right before he was ready to pee and say "NO" and pick him up and take him to the pee pad. Then, he'd go and I would praise, praise, praise and give him treats. He caught on really quick. As far as discipline, I've never had to discipline Jake. I just say "NO" when he's about to do something he shouldn't, and he listens. The key is to catch them right at the moment they do something wrong so they learn what they're being told "no" for. Of course, they will all try just to see if they can get away with it, but I say "NO" and Jake goes in a different direction. It's so awesome when it works and you see results like that! I love to watch Jake learn!:) |
