Peeing while asleep? I've figured out today that Molly will pee while she's in a deep sleep. We were on a road trip and she slept most of the way home. When I was cleaning out the truck, her blanket and pillow were wet. Same thing happened on the new couch a couple of weeks ago  and this would also explain the peeing in her crate at times. Any suggestions, other than waking up at 2:00 in the morning to take her out? She's 3 mos old, so hopefully this is something she will grow out of. But anything I could do to help it along would be great!! She does have a water bottle in her crate. How long should I leave that up, or will she always need that? Thanks!! Carla |
My puppy is almost 11 months old now and is a tiny girl at 3.3 lbs. When she was younger she would sleep pretty hard and pee in her sleep. I would just wash her off and throw her blankets in the wash. She has outgrown that now that she is getting older, just takes time for their bladders to mature. |
First, go to the vet. Loki has nighttime incontinence. At first we also weren't sure if he was peeing in his crate or what, but we also watched him sleep for an hour and he woke up wet, so we KNEW it was unintentional. The vet put him on a drug called PPA, Phenopropanoalamine (I think that's spelled right.) As long as I give him his medicine we have NO problems. Plus, the medicine tastes like meat so I don't even have to coax him to eat it. I keep it in the bathroom with my meds and I wash his face, brush his teeth and feed him his pill. So, it's really NOT the end of the world if that's what the vet says. In his case, a muscle holding the bladder shut just doesn't close tight enough and when he's sound asleep it relaxes. He doesn't leak during the day, and even at night it was never a leak but every 3-4 weeks or so he'd basically wet the bed. Even limited water before bed didn't help. We also would set an alarm for 2am. Finally, once we got the medicine, he slept through the night and has ever since. :) Loki also drinks too much, which just compounded the problem before we knew what it was. He probably drinks 4-5 times as much as he should, but I've had him tested for stuff and our vet is aware of the problem and he just apparently loves water. I do limit the water because he is obviously getting enough to drink when he goes outside every 45 mins and pees a river. We also started with a water bottle when he was a baby and he would drink the whole bottle every time we filled it. He stopped getting water in his crate because he wouldn't save it - he would just drink it all right away. I just make sure he gets enough throughout the day and he's fine if he needs to be in his crate for a couple hours. (I guess my point is... don't wait months to go to the vet like we did... because if it's something medicine you can get started right away!) |
Thanks for the tips. She is still just 2 lbs, so I'll give her a little longer to grow out of it. But we will have her spayed within the next few months. If it's still happening then I'll have the vet check it out. She has always drank a lot of water too, but not emptying the whole water bottle. How old was Loki when you took the water bottle away? Carla |
Once I found out how much he really *needed* to drink I took it away. He was probably 4 months old? We only bought it because we thought it would slow down his drinking, but it didn't. He'd lick the floor of the shower if I didn't close the door... sometimes when it's raining he goes outside and tries to drink the water coming out of the downspout. They say there is nothing wrong with him, medically anyway ;) Mentally something's not right :D If they are otherwise healthy but just like to drink water, they should have 1.5-2oz of water per pound of body weight per day. Loki is 12 pounds and probably drinks at least 32 oz, and his pee is clear. So I don't feel bad taking the water away after he's had that much, even if he's begging for it. If it's hot and he's panting I'll give him ice cubes and cold water, but if he just thinks he needs more water I don't always give it to him. He just doesn't know when to stop. Most dogs can have a big bowl of water down all day and just take a few sips at a time. Sammy does this and it's so strange to me! So, check with your vet because excessive drinking is a symptom of many diseases BUT it can also be nothing. |
Thanks again for the info. I'll start making a list of questions for my next vet visit. If we can't get the worms under control, that may be sooner than I had planned!! Carla |
