training help I need help with Lola. When we let her outside to go to the bathroom and play some we have to keep her on a leash. We live out in the country and have a big yard. When we let Abigail out and when I had Summer they don't have to stay on a leash they go do their business and come back in. They soemtimes stay out and play, but when you call their names they always come back in. Lola on the other hand takes off running if you don't keep her on a leash. Sometimes you can let her off of her leash and she won't run but most of the time she runs and when you call her name or go after her she runs faster. She just won't listen and learn that she can't run off. She is a little over a year and we have only had her for I think a little over 2 months. I am just wondering if there is any hope in her learning that she can run off when she is outside. If anyoen has any suggestions on how I can train her better it would be greatly appreciated. I don't if she is too old now to learn. I don't think she is, but any advice would be great. Thanks |

Kari, I saw on "Good Dog U" on animal planet that to train a pet to come back to you put them on a very long robe(something lite because she is small) and tie them to something. Then let them wonder off and call their name and have a treat ready when they come to you. If they don't come reel them in and then give them the treat and say good boy/girl whatever the case may be. Keep that up and she should finally get the message. Use a treat that she does not get indoors only outside for training. Good luck, hope it works for you. |

Along the same line as what Carol said..You can also hold the long longe line (use a piece of light weight clothsline with a clasp tied on the end) make sure it is long enough to give your dog room to wander off. You hold onto the one end, have good treats ready. When your doggie starts to wonder off away from you, you begin to run backwards in the opposite direction and with a very happy voice say...Lola come, you need to be very excited and make it fun..try not to repeat too many times..if she comes to you..good girl, treat. Then do it again, let her wander off..and start over. Maybe do this for 5-10min. at the most, do it daily several times a day. The goal of course is for her to eventually "come" on command off leash. This is the way I've trained all three of my dogs, they are all 99% at coming to me no matter what. I would never give a dog 100% as I don't believe in it, there will always come that time when the squirrel or whatever seems better then the "come" so be prepared always. Kathy :) |
