Mimi___GRRRRRRRRr Hi everyone..newbie here...Here's my story...Ok, i'm still in the process of attemping to potty train my yorkie Mimi but she just isn't doing too well in my opinion. She will be 5 months on the 11th and I've had her since she was 2 months. She pees and poops when I take her outside so thats a good thing. I bring her back in the house..try to give her a little freedom and let her run around my livingroom (supervised I must add) and as soon as I look away for a second..she pees or poops again. I am so frustrated..we are crate training her at the time and have been since she's been here. I never give her free run of the house but when I turn my back for a second she goes right on the carpet. I just don't know what to do anymore..I've tried everything and she just isn't getting it. How do I get her to tell me when she has to go outside. |
Several thoughts for you: First, it isn't unusual at all for potty-training to take longer. Try to be patient. Although a few pups "get it" when they are younger than 5 months, most don't. Be sure that you are adequately rewarding appropriate pottying outside. You want to really make it worth her while to go outside - immediately give extra yummy treats (which you have brought outside with you) and loads and loads of excited praise in your best little girl voice ("you are the best puppy ever. you are so smart. I'm so lucky to have you", etc). I'd confine her to areas without carpet until she is more reliable. I moved my computer into the kitchen when Joey was a baby so that we could both stay contained on the tile. ;-) For me, having my dogs ring a bell when they want/need to go out has worked extremely well. If I were you, I would simply suspend the bell from the door knob of the door that you take your puppy through to go outside. That way, she will begin associating the sound of the bell ringing with the door opening. You'll have to be on your toes. (This is another good reason to keep yourself contained with the pup). If puppy accidentally rings the bell, RUN to open it. She'll eventually learn "Hey, this works like magic. I ring this bell and Mom comes running to let me out! Cool." Good luck! |
First off welcome to YT...hopefully someone can help you! |
